Hi, this summer I grown 180 plant of a tobacco called « petit Canadien » or « small red Canadian ». It is a small nicotiana tabacum plant from the mid 1800’s.

Plant were small, many improvements were done so next year, the garden will be way better. I plan to grow 3 varieties, « parfum d’italie », « little dutch » and « petit Canadien ».

I air cured it in the barn attic’s and it is currently forced fermenting in my small kiln at 125f / 70% RH. I took some leaf kiln for about a week to turn them into cavendish and god that’s good.

Thank for all the information I read on this forum, there’s a lot of very useful threads.

Thanks Bob !

I did look a lot in the Key forum threads and the sub threads at the bottom of other threads.

A grown log should be a great idea, but what should I include in this grow log ?

The beauty of starting your own, personal grow log each year is that you can include or exclude whatever you choose. (Lots of photos are welcome!) I have found that my grow log helps me to document and remember details of my grow that I would otherwise forget. The grow log invites me to capture more photographs of my grow. It can serve as a platform for asking other members questions about your grow, and can encourage other members to ask you questions about your grow. Maintaining a grow log may also serve to enhance your own focus on some of the details of your growing effort.

welcome aboard - i've spent quite a bit of time just south of you in Montreal - it amazes me, wherever i eat dinner, the meal arrives and the plate looks like a work of art, before i've even tasted the food.

In searching for information on "petit Canadien", I came to this vendor site:

Terre promise Canadian Tobacco Varieties

It offers both "petit Canadien" and "parfum d’italie". Curiously, their listing for "petit Canadien" presented a total of 7 different names for it.

Also called "little red tobacco", this annual variety, with pink flowers, grows easily in all types of soil. Rustic, early and small in size, it matures in six weeks and produces a full-bodied tobacco.

This tobacco, also called "petit tabac rouge" or "small red canadian" is mentioned as far back as 1807 by the W.M Ewing & cie in their catalog of 1897. In Quebec, the Petit Canadien has been cultivated for more than a hundred years. From 1884, it was marketed by the J. O. Forest factory in Saint-Roch-de-L'Achigan. Considered rare.

I searched the US ARS-GRIN germplasm bank for every name and translation, with no indication of it. I searched the Canadian GRIN-GLOBAL (using the search term, "Nicotiana tabacum"), and looked at all their accessions.

They do list "parfum d’italie", describing it only as "pipe tobacco", but no sign of "petit Canadien" or any of its other names. I would be delighted if you could share your impressions of "petit Canadien", once it is ready for sampling.

There was a discussion of "petit Canadien" on the FTT forum last year:

Wonderful, if ever you have the time, there’s a pretty nice tobacconist called Blatter & Blatter in Montréal.

There’s many old tobacco book that talk about it but, like you said, there’s no sign of it in the Canadian seed bank. But it seems to be impossible to get seeds from them, it is only for research purpose. Some said that it could be “rose quesnel”.

When the kilning step gonna be done, for shure I gonna give my impression about it. Description talk about “corsé” in english full-bodied. What is full-bodied… I don’t have a clue ?

thanks - i'm due up there for the last time in about a month. Just sold my company and the foundry that was casting our main product is there - have to meet the buyers to let them inspect the cavity mold & tooling and close the deal.
I'll try to take a break and look for them

Correction. GRIN doesn't have petit rouge. They have a number that are also old Quebec tobaccos. Just not that one.
I did try to get seed from them but it seems to be only for research purposes…

I did go to blatter & blatter for the first time today after 15 years of pipe smoking, it is 2h30 hours away from me, but I had to go to Montréal so why not go for a visit ! There’s a very nice tobacconist in Quebec city to, it’s like 30 min from home. J.E. Giguere if you go to Québec for any reason.
