Hi all, my name is Tim. I'm a pipe smoker and member of pipemakersforum and pipesmokersforum. Someone from the latter pointed me here. I'd like to start blending my own pipe tobaccos and eventually try to make my own cakes and flakes using whole leaf. I'm here to read and learn as much as possible. I have a pretty good grasp of the different types of tobaccos based on my own smokingand tobacco buying experience, but I'm still confused on some basic points. I hope to remedy that here. Thanks for the resource!

Welcome to the forum, Tim.

I've smoked pipes for decades. My experience with flavored tobaccos is limited, but I've come pretty close on making some excellent English-style mixtures from home-grown leaf.

If you're interested in growing this summer, the time to germinate seed is now, and for the next several weeks. Ask away.

If you click on My Profile (upper Right), and add your location to your profile, that will be a big help to other members in answering your questions. Do check out the "FAQ for Beginning Growers", which we are currently finalizing. It also contains a link to a printable version. The FAQ is http://www.fairtradetobacco.com/showthread.php?675-Proposed-FAQ-for-Beginning-Growers (The link will be different, once the document goes live.)

Welcome Timmy, I also found my way to tobacco growing through a Pipe Makers forum. Being a D.I.Y. fanatic i fit right in. That was just a little over a year ago. I now have one season under my belt and am increasing my efforts this year by more than a factor of 12. 135 plants last year. 1800 this year.

Best of luck, growing your own can be a complex yet exciting undertaking. I am in my second year and still exploring varieties. I hope to try some different ways of curing this year also.
