Glad to find this place. This is my first year growing Tobacco. My dad was raised on a farm back in the 40's so i'm trying my hand at tobacco the way they grew it back then. My dad says in Kingstree,SC. my great grandfather yeilded more tobacco per acre than anyone else year after year because of care and nurtureing, but sometimes digging information out of him especially about a product that he's never condoned can be tedious to say the least. I've been dippin copenhagen since the late 70's (remember charlie daniels and mean joe green saying just a pinch between your cheek and gum ?) well that was my hayday ,so with the current state of the world economy we never know if it'll be available to buy. I've come to the conclusion it's time to grow it at home. Any help would be appreciated. sorry for the long 1st post.

Welcome! And get ready for a wild ride. this forum is awesome, but it's easy to get information overload. if you start to feel overwhelmed, just take a step back, take a deep breath, and only focus on one step at a time. this hobby is not difficult at all (hell, you can grow in 5 gallon buckets!) Have a great time!

I think the strain I am growing this year will make a great dip. Look for seed in the fall, I'm sure Fm will want it in the seed bank:) will be bagging it for the bank.

Bar G thats a 49 but the flattie had 5 cracks 4 were ok but the 5th went down in to the valve chamber, so now it has a 1998 mustang cobra 4-valve v-8 fuel injected with power windows ,a/c,air bags,4 wheel antilock brakes and rack & pinion all in the 49 frame and i kept the straight axle.

Workhorse_01, thats cool you still have it. Were'nt the 48-52 the same model if I'm not mistaken. I paid $400 for mine 37 yrs. ago and wish I still had. Only truck I ever had with dual water pumps.

It's in the barn ,and they were the same from 48-51, they didnt change untill 52 grill and front fenders but the same cab oh & 18 more hp. I just like the fact that it's pre-1950. I traded a old fork lift for mine. I also have and use a 1957 john deere 420w 2cyl gas tractor, she's old and honory but when it comes to workin she's the MAN ! I'll get a picture up soon.

Hey, Workhorse_01,
Welcome to a wealth of information site. This is my first year growing tobacco too. There is a lot to learn and a few challenges along the way, but I can't remember being so excited about learning how to do something new.

Is that a poppin john . My dad had a poppin john simular to that one and it had a sound of tis own . It would pull when it sounded like it was going to just die .
When his tractor came out it had all the tools with it , plow ,cultivators and a bush hog .We would spin the rear wheels out to set tobacco and spin them in for cultivating tobacco .

My first truck was a 1957 Dodge with a flat head six in it , three speed on the colum. I was young and hot rodded that truck . I wish I still had it today in the condition it was in when I bought it .
