Hello!

I'm excited this platform exists! I've been a cigar smoker for about 9 years now and throughout the years have built up a decent collection. However, I've always found myself gravitating towards certain blends/ types of cigars based upon how my palate was. With my palate changing over the years, I really enjoyed "dissecting" the mainstream cigars that I smoked and seeing what "recipe" was used. Not to mention, how that "recipe" tastes after palate changes. I have since put together my "grocery store" list of ingredients over the years that I would like to combine or mix together to see how they merry altogether. In addition to how I can spice it up or adjust with additions or subtractions of other types of tobacco.

Since Covid hit and the majority of my time has been spent at home. I've been picking up extra hobbies to stay busy. I will admit, my first starter order was with Leaf Only for a few lbs of leaf and a starter kit (I hope WLT & Leaf Only play well and I'm not upsetting anyone here. I apologize in advance if so). However, my next order will be with WLT to try out. I have noticed that WLT has a little more aged tobacco at this time that I've been having my eyes on. Also, I wanted to first try rolling a few cigars and see if I wanted to continue to do so... 36 cigars rolled in a week and a half so far.... I think I will continue this cigar rolling journey. I then attempted to add all the tobacco I wanted to see, taste, smell, and smoke that WLT offers. That was a fun experience! :) I had over 25 lbs of tobacco, totaling over $1,000. I decided to taper that back a lot. I'm eying up about 10 lbs, but am a little concerned about storage since its super cold and dry here in Wisconsin currently.

In a nutshell, I wanted to provide a little background and be as open as possible. I figure it will allow me to learn as much as I can from everyone and hopefully be able to help others in time. I do know how forums can sometimes be political and hope I'm not stepping on any land mines... I'm new to the cigar "rolling" forums, so please go easy on me to start. I have done enough research I think to get myself going on this, but I keep learning with each cigar I roll. I mention WLT & Leaf Only as they both seem to be the best companies out there that I've found. I have emailed &/or called and talked to both companies. Both have been very genuine and helpful. Both characteristics I look for in companies that I like to continue to support and appreciate.

Happy to meet you all and hope everyone is staying safe/ healthy during this time!

Welcome to the forum. WLT leaf will arrive in vapor-proof bags. They will remain in case, so long as the bag has not been opened. To open a bag, carefully cut off one end with scissors, then re-close it by pressing out excess air, then rolling the open end. Flatten the rolled end, and clamp it with two or three wood clothespins.

If the leaf becomes too dry, simply lightly mist the leaf with non-chlorinated water, and return it to the bag to equilibrate overnight.

Thanks Bob! I had a feeling it wasn't rocket science. I appreciate the tips!

Welcome, and I have to agree. Just putting items in the shopping cart is dangerous. Until next month.... I shall dream and put things in and out of my shopping basket. And pray I dont make a "oops, I pressed checkout"

This was my thoughts exactly!!! Don't need those plastic cards melting further! ha ha ha

A few pics of cigars I’ve rolled so far. Some have been formed with a wooden mold and some with brown paper that would’ve been used for padding, for items to mail out. I have more opportunities to roll than smoke, so my mindset now has been to try to get better and better at rolling 1 vitola and then expanding out. This is after rolling a fairly nice “cone” (#11) and some other larger vitolas just playing around. I also have separate bags set aside in addition to the bags of whole leaf for:
1) scrap filler (all scrap filler, binder, wrappers)
2) Spare wrapper (separated by type)
3) spare binder (separated by type)

I may be over complicating the process though.

Welcome to FTT, you are on a good start.
As Bob (deluxestogie) often advices : roll one, smoke one. It's a good method to learn how to roll correctly.
It's best to focus on the air draw than on the look of the cigar.

Thanks Charly!

At the moment I can roll more than I can smoke. I do my best with trying to do a cold draw before I put the wrapper on. I know this isn’t the best way to judge the draw, since it will tighten up a little more once the wrapper gets added. I’m hoping to be able to try my first in the next day or two. I do appreciate the advice!

So... I've been bitten by the bug for sure. Placed my second order on leaves. I'm excited for this order form WLT! Here's a glimpse of leaves I'll be trying different blends of:

Some leaves left over from first order (order total of about 3 1/4 lbs):
Wrapper- Ecuadorian Shade & Pennsylvania Broadleaf
Binder- Nicaragua & CT 2LS Broadleaf
Filler- Dominican Criollo '98 Seco, Dominican Criollo '98 Ligero & Nicaraguan Jalapa Seco

Incoming order (10 lbs):
-Terroso Profundo Kit- 1lb.
Wrapper: Habano 2000- (Super excited to taste this one. Nice description and look to it)
Binder: CV PA Binder
Filler: Corojo '99 Seco, Criollo '98 Ligero, Dominican Seco
-Wrappers- Dominican Olor, CV Corojo Oscuro
-Binders-Dominican Olor, Vuelta Abajo
-Filler- CV Corojo '06 Ligero, CV Corojo '06 Seco, CV Dominican Olor Ligero, Peru Ligero, San Vicente Ligero

Looking over it all, I appear to be fairly Ligero heavy. Something to consider for my 3rd order. Super excited to blend with these varieties! An Olor puro or perhaps with some San Vicente I've been debating. The Corojo '06 leaf I've found to be in many cigars I enoy that are the "mainstream" variety. Super happy overall with this continued journey!

A little better restraint than myself!
They all look so good. Fantastic descriptions! Which leaves have you been working with? Any special leaves you pulled the trigger on that peaked your appetite?

Lit up 1st and 2nd cigar rolled last night. The draw was perfect! Up until the last 1/3 where the end started to unravel a little. To be expected as this is an area of opportunity for me.

Blend in both:
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Shade
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Dominican Criollo '98 Seco

Pros:
-good burn
-consistent flavor

cons:
- 1 flavor throughout. Hoped it would ramp up or have a little more flavor, but for 1st sticks rolled... not bad.

Both cigars were taken out of a humidor they’ve been resting in for about 2 weeks.
