My "frequent" smokes are medium to medium/full cigars. I find the Oliva Serie B Meliano in a natural wrapper (I haven't tried the Maduro) is something I try to keep on land. I do love anniversary series 26/64 Padron's in a natural wrapper but they are a bit heavy on the pocket. So if I want to approximate the profile of the Oliva, what filler, binder, wrapper leaves should I be considering? If I can get the taste right, I'm likely to stick with this hobby longer while I develop some construction skills.
I am not the most experienced home roller (I probably have somewhere around 80 under my belt) so take what I have to say with a grain of salt, but you will never be able to duplicate your favorite commercial smokes. However, I have found you can get in the same neighborhood in some cases. I love Padrons too with the 64 and 24 maduros holding a special place in my heart. Naturally, I wanted something that reminded me of these. So far I have found the Nic condega tobacco from WLT to have that classic Nicuraguan robust profile, not Padron per se, but definitely in the same neighborhood.
Here are the blends ive tried so far that I like:
1:1 Nic viso to Nic Ligero
Sumatra binder
Corojo Oscuro or Ecuador Maduro Wrapper
Very good, but very long drying time. Very high in Nicotine for sensitive people like me.
1:1 Nic seco to Nic ligero
Sumatra binder
Corojo Oscuro or Ecuador Maduro Wrapper
Similair profile to above, but less nicotine, also a little more apparent astringency.
Favorite so far:
1:1:0.5 Nic Seco to Nic viso to Nic Ligero
Sumatra binder
Ecuador Maduro Wrapper
After 3 weeks of drying I found this to be very good, and in many ways quite similar to the padrons I love. Its not the same, but its very good.
If you like Nicaraguan profile, you can't go wrong with the WLT Nic tobaccos.
