Hi everyone,

I'm OJ from Central North Island New Zealand, hoping to learn a thing or two about growing my first lot of tobacco. Primarily I am interested in growing a bit for pipe smoking and am hoping I am not too late to begin the process being 3 weeks out from the official beginning of Summer. I am thinking to start out with some easy to acquire local Virginia cultivar with an aim to find a bit more diversity in future seasons for blending.

Any pointers will be more than welcome as I am a complete novice.

Cheers,

OJ

This late in your season you probably will not have enough growing time to produce any mature leaf. I still encourage you to grow a few plants for practice to be ready for next year. And they make attractive plants in the yard.

https://northwoodseeds.com/ has over a 100 varieties of seed to choose from.

Good luck and have fun!

Welcome to the forum. If your seed has 6-8 weeks of indoor growth, prior to transplant into the ground, then you will need at least ~2 months to begin to harvest mature leaf, and at least 3-4 months to produce seed.

No better place that I know of to learn the many nuances of growing and curing tobacco.
I would agree with GreenDragon that even if you’re a little late in the season to grow to a mature crop, go for it anyway because tobacco is a beautiful plant to have around mature or not. And you will probably enjoy the growing experience which will keep you motivated and give you a great knowledge base and a good head start on next season.

Sow your seed - it's still not too late. (But, almost).
Our climate is an equable one and you will be able to air-cure (ie. dry out) harvested leaves right up to about June.
It's an art - and not one learned in the first season. However, you have to start somewhere and it's not too late if you sow a tray of seed right now.

Did you start the grow yet?
There are short season varieties, at the moment I grow one that mature in 50-55 days if grown in Sweden.
I have a short growing season so I have been looking for fast varieties and the quickest maturing variety I have found matures in just 35 days. The seeds can be found here:
