Welcome Dave

hmm... Tabac Burley ?? Never heard of it. Can't tell much by the photo on the website though, except it appears to be a white stemmed burley type. Nice looking plants. Anyone here know anything about this one?

Welcome to FTT Dave. There's a lot of useful information about tobacco here. If you can't find what you want to know check the FAQ's at the top of the page and then ask. Lots of good guys and gals here to help you (and pull your leg).

Thanks guys!

I don't really care for the type of burley I am growing. It's just that I called the seeds company and they don't know.

For Lakota: tobacco = tabac You were close.

For Amberl: Am I really the only one using a weedmat? My neighbor had the "great" idea of planting bishop's gootweed near my fence. Now it's growing everywere. If I have to water them, I will.

Welcome aboard. I Almost always see the hole opened up bigger around the plant. It has to have air around the base.

That weed barrier has doubled my plant yields - been using it for years. In my opinion it has been the single most effective boost to yields of anything I've done for the plants. I help with compost, lime and fertilizer, but nothing gave the boost like the weed barrier.

It also saves a passle of work - I haven't had to hoe since I started using it!

Started with clear plastic and recycled gray fertilizer bags, switched to the black plastic used by veggie growers. Two reasons - the fertilizer bags took too much work to clean, open and place, and the clear plastic just let the weeds grow underneath.

I put drip tape irrigation underneath the plastic to water if needed.

The theory is that the benefits of the barrier come from the elimination of weeds competing for nutrients, and from moisture conservation. I'm told that 90% of the moisture plants get comes through capillary action from the soil moisture reservoir below, and the barrier prevents this moisture from evaporating, saving it for the plants.

I've received plants from Jack in NB yesterday. You can see that postal services were in a hurry to deliver it.

I think a major benefit to weed barriers, especially in the north, is that they heat up the soil in the spring.

If you're doing a grow under 1/4 acre, it's almost crazy to not use a barrier. Bigger grows almost need to rely on chemical assistance or cheap labor to combat weeds.

I just cut the grass, put the weed barrier and plant them.
You'll need to do more than jus cut the grass. The grass roots should also be removed or there won't be enough room for the tobacco roots.

Won't the weed barrier kill the grass?

The roots will still be there blocking the tobacco roots. It will make the grass go dormant, but unless you keep it under the weed barrier for years, it won't really kill the grass.
