Hello,

This is my first post. I just ordered 4.5 pounds from whole leaf tobacco. I'm going to attempt to make a few different variations of a VaPer roll/rope that I intend to cut into coins for aging. I have a few different ideas for blend proportions & casings, but this will be a big experiment. Wish me luck & if anyone has any tips or suggestions please let me know. I'm really excited but this is a bit intimidating.

What part of Washington State? I'm from the southeastern corner in farm country. As far away from Seattle both physically and philosophically as you can get and still be in Washington state.

Wes H

Hi Wes,

Unfortunately I'm closer to Seattle than I care to think about, south of Seattle near Maple Valley. I would love to get my family as far away from the hustle & bustle of the city as possible.

Welcome to the forum. For a Virginia/Perique ratio, I usually begin with 5 parts Virginia Bright to 3 parts Perique, and then adjust from there. Lemon Virginia can handle slightly more Perique, whereas Red Virginia seems to balance with a bit less Perique.

Bob

Thank you for the recommendations Bob, I really appreciate it!! I can tell I am going to need all the help I can get to get this project moving in the right direction.

So far for me anyway I have been using equal parts lemon, red, and perique for ribbon cut and it is perfect. It's perfect for a medium strength pipe on the go.
If you press it however I have found you can lower the perique to about 20% and still have a sublime, smooth, savory smoke.
Something about pressing the VA with the perique makes it a totally different animal.
It has quickly become my pipe of choice

Fantastic, thank you for the input!!! Do you use or suggest using any sort of casing? Do I need to add any sort of preservative so I can age it without worrying about mold/spoiling?

Ah yes, I know where that is. I spent a couple of years living in South Seattle / Tukwila, & working downtown near the old Kingdome.

Welcome to the forum. There are lots of experienced growers here that can give you useful info. Just ask.

Wes H.

P.S. Send us some of that rain. We only got .19 inches in all of April, and our spring crops look terrible!
