Hi guys/gals, greetings from Iceland. I've been lurking on this forum and others for a while trying to get better at rolling cigars. I think it's safe to say this forum is by far the best I've come across :)
So I guess I'm staying, finishing my coffee.
Last May I bought around 4 pounds of leaves from another source and have along with my cousin been going through trial and error ever since. The leaves were heavily taxed to say the least 0.12 US$ per gram! So we better make this count. We enjoy the process of rolling so even though the cigar itself will be expensive in the end, we are really enjoying the time spent rolling too. We are continuously improving and always looking for more information so big thanks for the moderators and guests on this forum you have helped us ALOT.
I'd like to try to add 2 pictures of cigars that were rolled last week, Nicaraguan filler and Binder with an ecuadorian wrapper (the dark one ;)) The lighter looking ones are a blend that I am hopeful will turn out to smoke like a chimney and be full bodied. Fillers made from Cameroon, Nicaragua. Double binder (Mexican San Andres & Connecticut) Wrapped in Connecticut Shade grown. We'll see where that takes us. All cigars were pressed with plastic foil similar to sausages, a trick my cousin learned from years of working as a chef.
Thanks for this awesome little community

Welcome to the forum. If you place your location in your profile, it will appear alongside all your posts (and impress everyone). Do you have a 90 day growing season in Iceland?

Why, of course ... all for your own good!

So how icy's the ice in Iceland? Melt much yet?

My favorite picture from Iceland:

We were in Minnesota this summer when the Northern Lights lit up. You must have had one helluva show up there:

Thanks for the warm welcome and praise :) Good to know they look good to seasoned veterans!
Unfortunately i dont think i could grow tobacco here unless in a lamp powered greenhouse, then again electricity is extremely cheap so.. you never know right?

Hah Webmost that picture is awesome, there were quite a few funny signs during those protests! And yes we do get absolutely humbling spectacles of northern lights every now and then, it really pays off to drive away from the light polluted city and see it in the countryside. There was a video posted last week in the national media of amazing video capture from the countryside, check it out: https://video-ams3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/h...=42cc61debb5cbb718a27847ba84201d9&oe=55E6552C

Please if the link is too much or can somehow be made easier on the eye, i'm more than willing to fix it, just haven't got the skillset :)

The link works, and the forum automatically shortens its display. Very nice.

From what I can find on-line, the length of the growing season in Iceland, depending on the location, is between 75 and 120 days. If your area has at least 90 days, you can get a leaf crop of tobacco, though not a seed crop. The unusually long days during the summer may actually speed things up. A tiny test crop next year (say about 60 to 120 square feet) might be worth a try. Seed would need to be started 2 months before last frost, and the seedlings transplanted after last frost.

Growing season maps: http://www.smhi.se/hfa_coord/nordklim/old/report06_2001.pdf

If you feel up for a try, PM me.

Jesus, thanks Bob. The tobacco plant must be a sturdy one. Who knows, maybe i'll do an experiment and try to grow something. If I do, you are the first I'm speaking to :) Thank you for the info and the warm welcome

Sver -

Does anyone grow tomatoes up your way?

If so, you can get a crop of tobacco from many of the earlier maturing varieties.

You don't even need a garden. Plants grown in buckets do very well. Figure about four plants per pound of leaf. It's not just the tobacco you will produce, it's a fascinating hobby as well.
