Hey guys, I've been smoking pipe for about a decade now, off and on, and I've recently taken up gardening. Then, while smoking my pipe while transferring some sprouts... You get the picture. Anyway, I've been reading a lot of how this all works, but I have yet to see how these kilns are set up. How are the thermostats and humidity controllers added in to the situation? I'm kind of an idiot, but I can follow plans, does anyone have a schematic or something I could take. Look-see at? Or point me in the right direction?

Essentially my goal here is to make a navy plug. And I'm not sure when rum is added to the tobacco. There seems to be a lot of differing opinions? Again, I apologize for my idiocy. I'm a step-by-step person, and I haven't seen that yet.

Welcome MediumRegular.
The kiln is not a necessity, but it helps the tobacco to age faster.
You can make some plugs without the need of a kiln ;)

Just take your time and read as much as you can from the "FAQ for Beginner" and from the various "Key Threads" available.

How do you ferment it then?
Ok, here's what I've gathered so far, quick fast and dirty, without all the nuance;
1) Grow
2)Harvest
3) Dry (air/sun/kiln)
4) Ferment (kiln/pile)
5) Case/top???
6) press???

Anyway, seeds come soon (Virginia and Perique seeds {someone said Perique is a process, not a strain, and someone else said the opposite, but that's what the seeds were marketed as so that's what they're getting called, I'll let you know what they are when it grows}) so I'll try to remember to post updates of the process.

Welcome to the forum. There is a variety of tobacco called Perique. It will give you a large, robust air-cured tobacco. Nothing special.

There is a process, which can be used on any variety, that produces the "Perique" of commercial pipe tobacco. [Find the thread in the Index of Key Forum Threads.]

  1. grow
  2. harvest
  3. color cure (either in a shed or sun-cured)--it's got to cure before it dries.
  4. Ferment in a kiln. You won't have enough leaf to do the pile method.
  5. Rest
  6. smoke
I would strongly suggest trying your finished tobacco, before resorting to chemicals and potions (casing).

Look in the Index of Key Forum Threads (link at the top), for the thread on the endoskeletal kiln. It has a ton of detail. There are other ways to do it, and different equipment.

DeluxeStogie summed it up well.
All I can add is that if you want to make some plugs, you can skip the fermentation/kiln step, and let your plug age naturally.

Thanks! I've been wondering that! You just throw the tobacco into a press and let it do it's thing in there?

No need to let your tobacco in the press for very long, a few hours to a few days is more than enough. Once they are in plug form they will age nicely (as long as they are not too wet or too dry.
