I am going run a gear belt with the same size pulleys to a gear reduction motor running @ 200 rpm.
I won't use his side bearing holders. I will machine sides for everything to fit onto. Something like a powermatic.

What about a flywheel and a starter motor?

my 2 cents...

A flywheel in motion would assure the mechanism continued to revolve to the point of destruction when a jam occurred.

A gearmotor is complicated, troublesome, and expensive.

Simple V belts from the local hardware store, for swamp cooler use and such, would be appropriate at this hp level and frequency of use.
Precision alignment is not really required.
If adjusted reasonably, belts would serve as a relief mechanism should there be a bind, or jam in the cutter section.

I thank him for being the first one to take the chance and buy one of these heads.
They are not cheap and I never wanted to take the chance until I saw a good review.

I just shredded another 2 pounds this morning. I had 2 jams from over feeding (trying to test the limits). The jam was easy to clear by (once I turned off the power) just turning the pulley manually in the opposite direction.

I also am not sure if 200 rpm is the optimal speed. Maybe more, maybe less. I might play around with some different pulley diameters this winter.

BT, looking forward to your build, should be interesting!

We have been emailing all day back and forth and says 200 rpm is best. He recommends anywhere from 100 to 200 rpm. Can go higher tho. Was the jamb from the belt slipping in the pulley or locked up the motor?

The jam was from me feeding too much threshed tobacco in too fast. The rollers/cutters stopped but the belt slipped on the pulley so the motor kept chugging away.
