With Ammonium Sulfate it is usually recommended to either water the garden first or to wait for a rain. This is to help dissolve the fertilizer so it does not burn your plant's roots

thanks, i knew you had to water it in, but was wondering if you have to wait a bit afterwards, to give it time to dissolve/spread out?

Do wait until the soil has dried enough not to compact it while you put in the transplants. Crumbly and slightly moist is good.

My local Farmer's Co-op sends off for soil tests for free. They even give you the envelope. If you put on the envelope what you're growing you will get your test results back with recommendations on what you need to add and how much for what you are growing. Call around you might get lucky and find the same deal. It's the cheapest way to go anyway cause you only add what you need and don't waste lime or fertilizer by just guessing. I grow winter clover that helps with my nitrogen and draws in the deer and turkeys.
