This is a copy of the last email from Doug, My count is 230 varities on the list. If we have some that is on the list that has not germinated I am sure Doug will send us seeds. Russ[FONT="]
as per request I've put together the attached pdf listing my seedbank. I'll compare the FTT seedlist and not send duplicate seed of varieties already in your seedbank. You'll also notice on my seedlist that there are hybrid varieties listed. My intention is also not to send hybrid varieties since these would be of little value for grow-outs. The hybrids are varieties produced for commercial cultivation primarily for disease resistance-purposes. The only real value in growing out hybrids would be those hobby growers who specialize in reverse-hybridization. This refers to replanting seed saved from hybrids over a period of seasons to develop new varieties that will offer unique genetic combinations of the original mother plants (lines). Reverse-hybridization I imagine to be a rather rare or nonexistent hobby interest to your community. FYI Doug [/FONT][FONT="][/FONT]

Holy shit, thats a huge list. I have visions of Don picking himself off the floor and thinking 'time to get a bigger fridge' lol. In all seriousness i think somethings gonna have to be worked out to ease the work load on Don.
Doug is going to send me the first batch of seeds this Monday. He has many more seeds in deep storage. He will get these out at his leizure and probably have the rest of the seed bank ready for me to pick up in the fall. With the seeds he is sending he will list the age of each varieity so that we will know what ones need to be grown out first.
Also, As stated earlier he does not plan to send any hybrid seeds but if someone wants to play around with them let me know and he will make them available. Although he does not plan on sending any duplicate seeds that are already in the FTT Seed Bank he will do so if one of his duplicates are a match for one of our "urgent need" grow out varieties.

I talked to Doug for about an hour today on the phone. Heck of a nice guy, btw. He told me pretty much everything already mentioned here and that he has a package about ready to send to JBD. I will also be getting the varieties of seed from him that I don't already have after we compare lists.
He told me he stores his seed in a freezer in air tight sealed bags after thoroughly drying them. Like in "seal a meal" bags. So they should keep a very long time. Along with that list Lakota posted, Doug told me he has several varieties of seed in his freezer that he got from the ars-grin seed bank and never got around to growing them out. There could be some real gems lurking there too.
Tobacco seed has a very long "shelf life" if stored properly. Germination rates remain stable for the first 5 years, and then decline at about 2% per year there after. If you freeze tobacco seeds, or any other type of seed, you must get the moisture content down to 7% before freezing to prevent damage. Humidity, temperature and light are seeds biggest enemies when it comes to storage. And there are HUGE differences in how long various types of seed will remain viable. For example, germination rates for beans and lettuce will drop to under 50% in only 3 years. About half the seed companies I deal with freeze their seeds for storage and half store them in a refrigerators at 40-45 degrees. There doesn't seem to be any real consensus on which is better and I have never seen any studies that compared the two methods. Both methods seem to work very well for long term storage of tobacco seed.

Sounds like the seed bank just grew a lot! I have stored seeds of many types for many years and whether in the freezer or refrigerator, most seed will do well, assuming the lack of moisture.
Randy, Do you have a distribution plan yet? Are there sufficient quantities available for distribution?

No I do not. I'll wait and see how many varieties Doug sends me and then we can figure out how to distribute. I should probably post them on here and send small quantities out to those that want them, then send the rest to FTT

Awesome acquisition!! Preserving diversity like this begins to give me hope for the future. Addressing freezer versus refrigerator for seed preservation: I have observed germination results from my vegetable seeds stored both ways. I started attempting long term preservation about 10 years ago when i acquired a frost free deep freeze unit. The only differences I have noticed beyond the 5 year mark is that seeds stored low temperatures and humidity are 3 times more likely to germinate that the seeds I stored in my traditional dark sealed containers. I do notice a significant loss of viability using a deep freeze that I attribute to improper preservation(too much moisture in the seed). Overall refrigerator preservation in well sealed containers has worked the best for me. I live in suburbia and really like knowing my seed will last longer through my rotations and cover plantings.
