Very happy to have found WLT and this forum. I've been smoking since the age of nine back in 1958. Favorite cigarettes were unfiltered Pall Mall's and Camels when I could get them. Also at the time, Bond Street pipe tobacco, I had started my career with a one dollar pipe - all I remember is it was briar with a yellow stem. Smoking was and is the greatest! So being in Canada and having a hard time getting quality pipe tobacco ( I've smoked a pipe exclusively for the last 30 years ) I had lately begun to worry about a continued supply, particularly with so many of the great tobacco company's folding/changing. So after receiving my order from WLT I was amazed to see that the flavors from the great tobaccos I had smoked in the past were now possible. The only problem now is what to do with my cellar of tinned tobaccos, which I guess would be ok for smoking while fishing or mowing grass.

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to scan through the topics in our Index of Key Forum Threads, for subjects that may interest you. It is linked in the menu bar.

The "secret" to smoking tinned pipe tobacco (after experiencing actual, pure tobacco) is to set aside a day when all you will smoke is the tinned tobacco. That way, your mouth will not be shocked quite as much by the transition between tobacco vs. humectants and toppings.

Bob

EDIT: I still have quantities of commercial pipe blends that I purchased 20 years ago. They are feeling neglected.

Thank you for all the warm welcomes. 93rd Canadian, The commercial tobaccos I smoked were McCelland Virginia's ( still have a few tins left ) SG FVF, Irish Flake, University Flake, and the old Murrays 965, also SG 1792 which has not been available for the last 2 years. One of my favorite tobaccos from the far past was State Express, an oriental mixture, the hand painted tin always included a whole tobacco leaf or two.

I had a feeling you might mention my favourite pipe tobacco company. Im slowly working my way through some experiments with pressing, stoving, and cooking, to produce something similar enough to McClellands Blackwoods or Darkstar. Ill be happy to share if I ever do find the secret, I think cooking and pressing will get me there but Im not there yet.

It just so happens that Blackwoods and Darkstar were the last 2 tobaccos I purchased from Smokingpipes.com before returning back home from my annual winter's stay in the Carolinas. The axe fell on McClelland's shortly thereafter. It was the first time I tried them and they were excellent. I paid about $16 for each tin. I still have more than 3/4 left of each one and only smoke them on special nights. Today browsing the net I saw a tin of Darkstar ( just like mine ) with an asking price of $285 U.S. I still have a whole bunch of McCelland bulk virginia's that I bought over the years during the winters I spent in the U.S. Now with all the border red tape and other stuff I'm spending my time here in Canada happily smoking away and getting ready for the canoe season.
