Hey, My name is John Michael. I live in Papua New Guinea, though from the Mississippi in the States. Seeing as though it's tough to get tobacco through customs and I've got this nice tropical climate that affords me a lot of the year to grow tobacco, I figure I better learn what I can about this whole process. From what I hear this is the place to learn. Thanks for sharing all your know-how. I'm looking forward to learning for you guys.

Welcome John to our Merry Band. It's a good place to learn. The FAQ's at the top of the page are a great place to start. Just out of curiosity how did you stumble on us? What do you smoke, Cigs, cigar, pipe? How did you get to New Guinea? Must be an interesting story. Do you have a set growing season or are you sub tropical? I know, a lot of questions. That's what you get for being the new guy on the block.

Well, "BigCasino" from this forum mentioned you guys to me over on pipemakersforum.com so I thought I'd check things out here...glad I did. I mostly smoke pipes, but have an occasional cigar as well. I'm a missionary here in PNG working with the Hewa tribe. I can pretty much grow year round here, though things seem to come up at certain times better than others.

I think I got all your questions, but if not feel free to fire away.

Only one more. Do you need seeds?

since you already have some started, a couple pics of your new plants would be great. As a bonus for you, maybe one of the gurus here can at least closely identify what variety you are growing as well as be able to offer pointers on curing/harvesting/expectations for what the finished leaf will be like.

Welcome to the forum.

you could add them right here, or start your own thread under the "grow blogs" section if you want to update from time to time as your crop progresses.

I think I'm alright for now. I've got about 10-15 stalks already coming up...probably about half way from harvest. No idea what sort of leaves, just what some of the Hewa men gave me. But thanks for asking.
I checked your climate. The high humidity may make curing and storing leaf a challenge. I am sure you are no stranger to mold. Don't hang your leaves too close together. The local plants may or may not make good pipe tobacco. You might want to consider stocking up on other varieties for the future. The guys here are pretty generous with their seeds. Your weather is similar to central america so I would expect you to have fine crop. Good luck.
