I tried real hard to get the grain layout right when I layed the pipe out on the block. I just wet it to see how I did and I think I nailed it. It's a shame I have to cover this up with rustication but that big flaw is a deal breaker.

You could always just do a partial rustication to blend away the flaw and still be able to save the grain on the sides and front.

Try it. If it smokes good keep it and move on. It's a hell of a first effort and worth keeping on that basis alone. -- J

Right now I have a dyed brown two part epoxy drying in the hole. If I get it to blend in with a stain I will leave it alone as I really like the grain. The flaw doesn't penetrate the chamber but it has to be so close that burn through could happen at anytime. I may just put it up as my first pipe and try to get better with the next one. :)

Or just luckier. That defect wasn't your fault.

Thanks Sir John. I made plenty of mistakes but I learned from them. One was not to bend the stem until last, I nailed the end of it with the sander while bringing down the shank to stem size. lol

Got the shank and stem shaped together. One more layer of stain tonight and I buff tomorrow. I wet it again to imitate a buffed shine. Hopefully tomorrow I can show you my first pipe. Critiques and suggestions, as always, are welcomed and appreciated.

My next pipe is going to be made out of rich pine knot. I love that grain and the smell is out of this world.
Big B has Osage? I looked it up on Wikipedia and it's natural range is NE Texas. I wonder if somebody transplanted it there. They showed some bowls made from it, very pretty wood. Olive wood is nice looking too.

It's the densist wood there is, thanks to bb it now grows in Vermont too:)

You'd know it if you had it, the hedge apples are a menace from what I read.

But yeah they were the barb wire of the last generation so wherever people needed a hardcore fence it was grown, a lot of the modern farmers still have a lot of it.

I would think any area with circular growth like near a branch or near the roots would be optimal. But the wood is so dense any piece should be fine, grain pattern might be all that matters

First pipe. Buffed and stuff. The flaw at the back above the stem filled in nice and blended in decent with the contrast stain. I murdered the bottom of the bit through stupidity. I'm currently smoking some of Don's TN90 through it. The taste isn't that bad, I'm starting to think the bowl coating in my store bought briars was the main culprit in the nasty experience I had breaking them in. This one is not bad. Thanks for looking.
