This is an ebauchon cut:

This is plateau. Cut from the outside of the burl with the bark still attached. The grain on the plateau runs up and down showing straight grain as seen from the side, like in my last pipe. The ebauchons, the grain runs sideways showing mostly burl as seen from the side.
The ebauchons are cheaper. If you lay an ebauchon on it's side the grain runs like the plateau. The last pipe I made is from a plateau, the grain on the side runs up and down, with birdseye on the bottom of the pipe and top of the bowl. A pipe made from an ebauchon will show birdseye on the sides with straight grain on top and botton.

Knucklehead, I have some Olive wood, which i believe it could be good for pipes. I just need to know how big should be. I collect one upper part of stump in Greece back in 2004 and i have some of it left. Back than I cut it in two and one inch. It's being air-dried on my attic since than. The wood is very hard, but nice when it's polished. I can miss piece or two if you know what I mean?

Maks - olivewood makes a beautiful pipe. A Medium size block is +/- 1-3/4" W x 2-1/2 - 2-3/4" H x 3-1/2" L. A Large block is 1-3/4" W x 2-3/4 -3" H x 3-3/4" L. Google olive wood pipe and you will see some beautiful examples.

Yes for hunting and riding ATV in winter. Plus for my collection. Will look nice hanging beside a Yugo 48 Mauser or russian Mosin nagant.
I will send information when i get to my desktop PC. I am nearly helpless on this tablet thingy.

I was making similar noises earlier when the belt sander took my finger down to the meat. It may have been backwards though. HAA-YEE!!

I just finished a couple more. This first one is another billiard style. Handmade ebonite stem. Brass ring. I forgot to snug up the stem after polishing. It does fit tight, no gaps.
