This is an ebauchon cut:
This is plateau. Cut from the outside of the burl with the bark still attached. The grain on the plateau runs up and down showing straight grain as seen from the side, like in my last pipe. The ebauchons, the grain runs sideways showing mostly burl as seen from the side.
The ebauchons are cheaper. If you lay an ebauchon on it's side the grain runs like the plateau. The last pipe I made is from a plateau, the grain on the side runs up and down, with birdseye on the bottom of the pipe and top of the bowl. A pipe made from an ebauchon will show birdseye on the sides with straight grain on top and botton.
