Transplanted 7 varieties into buckets.
Had to get creative. Cats made the 5 gallon buckets into beds. Then when I started watering the buckets (before transplanting) the cats got mad and started peeing in the buckets...... so I had to cage the buckets

So I think its important to note, I did see someone else mention it somewhere, the Arcadian Rythm seems to be important to tobacco. I did not think about it last year but growing in the house I see a huge impact that rhythm has on growing. Tobacco seems to grow better at night in the dark. Which is strange to me for a plant that needs light to sprout.

Most plants grow more at night than during the day.

Indiana University time-lapse movie of a plant growing:

I think this may be more important than I at first thought. It may be a factor in some of my plants damping off. I lost 3 varieties so far. 3 varieties look great, 2 are iffy. I think I may need a timer to keep the rhythm exact as soon as they are planted in soil

Starting mix i made myself. I used black soil screened really fine. Added sphagnum peat moss and for any clay packing I mixed sawdust in to break it up. On top of the soil is a 30 year weed stop guaranteed to allow water and air through.

Only 3 varieties have survived so far. Im attempting the other 5 again.
The 3 that are still growing are
Small Stalk Black Mammoth
Connecticut Broadleaf
Staghorn

After that initial sprout that did great 2 varieties seem to be having trouble with sprouting.
Madole
Big Gem
All 5 restart varieties had fresh seeds to start so im puzzled. (Madole had 3 sprouts this morning but its been 3 weeks to get a sprout)

Low temps can slow down germination. 75 F temperature and a pre moistened good quality commercial potting soil might be worth a shot. Covering the trays/pots with a plastic dome or plastic wrap until they sprout may also help since the house is probably dry this time of year.

Me being me I had a thunk. Ive got some "pure dairy compost" from wally world. (It was on clearance so I thought sure why not). For most plants I would think whoa way to rich but for tobacco..... hmmmmm then I wonder maybe has anyone tried using something similar as a starting soil? So I thought I'd ask here.
And ps my thunks have gotten me in trouble but I never stop getting them.
