Glad to join the forum, and this is my first year in growing tobacco at home. Seattle's a great place to live, but not the most tobacco friendly region in the world. :)

Agreed not that I know what I'm talk-in about but think tobacco could damn near grow on a Ice Burg...

Welcome. Skychaser is from Washington and TheOtherOne is from Oregon so we have a couple of members in your area that have experience with your growing conditions.

No, it's not quite that bad. lol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle#Climate

"Downtown Seattle averages 71 clear (sunny) days a year, with most of those days occurring between May and September. Between October and May, Seattle is mostly or partly cloudy six out of every seven days.

Despite being on the margin of the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, the city has a reputation for frequent rain. This reputation stems from the frequency of precipitation in the fall, winter, and spring. In an average year, at least 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) of precipitation falls on 150 days, more than Boston (120 days), New York (113 days), Washington, D.C. (111 days), or Atlanta (107 days).

At 37.41 inches (950 mm), the city receives less precipitation annually than Boston (43.70 in or 1,110 mm), New York (49.92 in or 1,268 mm), Washington, D.C. (39.67 in or 1,008 mm), Atlanta (49.68 in or 1,262 mm), and most cities on the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S."

If you want to see what wet is, you have to go out on the ocean side of the Olympic Peninsula.

"Around 80 mi (129 km) to the west, the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park on the western flank of the Olympic Mountains receives an annual average precipitation of 142 inches (3,610 mm)."

Nice to get acquainted, and thanks for the warm welcome. (We need heat up here about this time of the season) This year has definitely been an interesting one in terms of growing, and curing, and now fermenting. I started, planting seeds in mid April, and have been able to grow several different varieties including Havana, Virginia, Connecticut, Habano & Criollo. Ironically I have a lot of leaves on plants still not quite ready for priming, and here it is in late October!

Being a first-timer, I realized that I should have started seeds indoors around the end of February so as to be finished air-curing the last half of September. Despite horrendous rains, blasting winds, and very inconsistent temperatures, I was able to grow roughly 40-50 plants reaching about 65". What I didn't realize in starting this year was the amount of attention required on a daily basis, as had decided to most of the plants in 3 gal pots on different sides of the house. Just started several batches in fermentation, so hopefully that goes well and looking forward to learning and sharing results.

Your Winter is long enough to pick up allot of things before next year, maybe even some new varieties to try. Good luck with what you're working on!
