Reminds me of me 2 years ago :) I think the list looks delicious and if you even just went with the first 3 you'd have an amazing first year.

This reply will look a bit strange to most because it includes things I know about Randy from PM's. Sorry if it is confusing to others.

So far I have not had the best results from Havana types growing them in small space. They will grow just not as well as some others. Give them a shot if you really want to but keep the numbers limited until you know how they will perform.

Teh best producers I have sen from buckets have been.

African Red which your Penn Red leaf may be simular.
Costello
Dark Virginia

I grow for cigarette tobacco not cigars.
Burleys seem to do better than average. Virginians do not like close spacing and i have not found one to be better than others yet. Silver river has done very well for me with huge leaves even grown in a bucket.

Other than your top three I would suggest you pick one havana and grow a few of them just to see and then grow some of one type of burley, the wrapper and maybe the bezuki and Brazil Dark. Your space is so small you don't want to get to much variety though.

I 2nd the notion on growing only a few Havana, I love my 142, amazing taste but they aren't the best producers. my Green brior burly grew absolutely amazing, 5.5 feet tall+.
Seeds are cheap if you buy them, practically free if you get them from FTT members. Try some out, see what you like.

I'm not aware of a seed source for Bezuki. I'm not sure exactly what Brazil Dark is.

Bob
The seed source for all came mostly from the list from FAQ page here
[list of seed source]and the others from looking on the web.

varietals and sometimes they would add a resistance to something and stabilize it so it was still based on the original but now it was modified for a new feature.

click any attribute in the observations and it will let you sort by year and stat. so i chose that 1 particular year because it was all named varieties, only 350 or whatever tho, the others are closer to 1k but are all the introduction varieties usually.

but once again it's the grin. check the size, then check the days to maturity, if they harvested below 90 days, it's smaller than it will be in your field.

just using what i grew this year because it is fresh in my mind, the harvest was 53 days, like 4 feet tall and 9x16 leaves (might be off i will dbl check later) what i grew was 90 days, 5 foot (topped) and 10x20 at the largest leaf.

if you sort by yield per dry cured leaf, go down to the bottom, click the variety then check the harvest time, it will be over 90

highest yield from that grow year was mammoth ky 16, it was also harvested 100-105 days. lowest (non oriental) was l8, it was harvested at 56-67 days. so yeah you gotta look at their numbers for what they are.

even though it is presented as such, it isnt apples to apples.

Quick unrelated question. What do the numbers after the names mean?

As in TN90 or Havana 142

In some cases the letters are an abbreviation for who or where it was developed and the number is the year it was released.. TN 90 was developed Tobacco Experiment Station in Greeneville Tennessee and released in 1990. TN 86 was its predecessor and was released in 1986. TN 86 was tested as Greeneville (GR) 136 prior to its release.

I don't know how Havana 142 got its name..

Excellent observation Smokes. I hadn't put that together. I had noticed that my yields on some varieties far exceed theirs.

Randy if you want to grow to sell then either think a lot of dried weight per plant or specialty hard to come by leaves. Other than that I couldn't say being a novice.

Talk to Daniel, He went bust doing that. Homegrown means just that. I grew at home And wouldn't justify doing it any other way. The labor for a small plot is not a commercialy viable option for income.
In my humble opinion.
Even if I sold all my tobacco ,I wouldn't have none.
