So, I have some burley, VA and oriental coming in the mail. As I'm about to switch from cigarettes to the pipe, I'll be trying to keep my nicotine intake from pipe tobacco at a high. As such, I've decided I'd like to use lots of burley in my blends due to its high nicotine levels and low rate of tongue bite.

But here's my question: Am I able to work with the three tobaccos I have coming in the mail? Is a 50/50 blend of burley/VA or burley/oriental any good? Ideally, I'd like all of my blends to consist of at least 50% burley for the time being. Does anyone have any experience doing this? I know burley is meant to be quite strong on its own. This doesn't bother me, so long as it produces a decent flavour.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes you can work with "only" Those. But I most say taste and nicotine is often 2 different things. If you add a orient tobacco you often get a tobacco with lower nicotine but more taste. You can also read about PERIQUE and other things you can make (not so hard if you really want). FTT is really a place for you (if you take the time and really want to learn more). If you want to grow tobacco you can open the door for alot of different worlds, a lower Nic in a Burley and a higher Nic Virginia can be interesting to play with..But you shall also known I ain't a smoker myself, make most oral-snuff. But I hope my answer can be a help for you.. Good luck//Hasse W

Coming from smoking I think you'll have a hard time not inhaling the pipe, as it takes a long time to get any noticeable nicotine from smoking w/o inhaling.

What will work is turning that burley into snuff or snus. Just a thought. Good luck.

Imagine a cigarette that is 3/4" in diameter. That's like smoking ~5 normal cigarettes simultaneously. My suspicion is that 50% burley (unless it is a very mild burley) in a pipe blend will feel like a sledge hammer. Burley has a higher pH than flue-cured Virginia, which allows the nicotine to be absorbed more rapidly from the mouth and nose and throat.

The "drug store" pipe tobacco brand, "Half-and-Half," is half burley and half flue-cured, but this is heavily cased, and burns more slowly than natural tobacco.

Whatever proportions you decide upon, begin with tiny batches, and take notes.

Hasse: If only I discovered FTT before the Canadian winter came rolling around. I think I'll give growing my own a shot come spring time.

Smokes: Refraining from inhaling is certainly tricky, though I've switched to cigars in the past rather successfully without inhaling. Hopefully I'm able to do the same with the pipe. I'm interested in the pipe this time as it seems like it would be somewhat more convenient (rolling up to ten cigars a day can be trying, especially when you're not that good at the process).

Deluxe: Thanks. I think I'll start by blending a bowl's worth of tobacco at a time, so as to refrain from getting in over my head.

The nice thing though, is that there is always a next year in which you can grow. At least you've got ample time to prepare! It'll be time to germinate in no-time. Good luck with the pipe blend!

To contradict what I said before, if you make a pipe blend that is very potent, it's nearly impossible to inhale it--though it may not be smokable.

Whole Leaf Tobacco's burley smokes and tastes really good. Smoking it straight knocks me on my ass so I think is exactly what you're looking for.

Do you guys toast it or do anything to it prior to packing a bowl?

Yes ... I toast my Burley at 185F for 20 minutes then case it (molasses / cocoa mix) ... repeat this a few times and it really smooths out the flavors.

On the last round of toast and case only bring it back to light casing for storage / aging.
