Has anyone tried starting seeds in worm castings ? Mine seem to be growing slow but i have nothing to gauge it by as this is my first year at it. I started my seed outside in the last years worm box and to me they seem to be growing slow ,my dad says plants started outside like the old way in beds will be slower but stronger plants in the end any thoughts ?

I don't know if an outdoor bed will produce stronger plants, but their growth rate will be determined to a large extent by the ambient temperature. The "traditional" tobacco growing regions were often defined by their climate's ability to permit the starting of seed outdoors while still having enough growing season remaining to mature the plants.

Southern Washington State I can see Oregon from my
I have a worm bin myself what I have done in the past is to
mix it in with my soil in my patch. I use it as a soil additive.
It's a great organic fertilizer.

the main question is are they store bought worm castings,????

or castings you produced yourself,????

store bought worm castings really aint too good unless you moisten them up into a type of '' tea'' { worm tea''}

i start mine in '' vermiculite'' just sprinkle the seeds on top of the verm. and mist daily, NEVER FAILED ME YET<

Haha the name isn't referring to the plant? I think 1 sucker refers to how many you can expect on average BEFORE topping.

I always get stressed about the plants for the first two weeks. seems they always grow very slowly. at 2 weeks I am lucky if they are as big around as a nickle. At 4 weeks they should be about 2 inches across from leaf top to leaf tip. At 6 weeks they will be a foot across. Notice that a huge growth spurt started at about 4 weeks of age and the plant becomes a monster in jyst two weeks. Place them outside and all bets are off. It is very clear to me that when exposed to the extremes of outdoor temperatures etc that their growth is completely irratic. Hold on long enough and they will take off and grow when things are just right.

I didn't mean that to be mean BarG (i would never disrespect anyone here), I just thought it was funny if that is what the farmers meant when they named it:) likewise I always thought the name meant it didn't go crazy with suckers after topping

I took it the way you meant it. I hope it means less suckers. I bought the seed because it was a dark air cured tobacco and was supposed to be normally used for chewing tobacco and snuff, ding,ding,ding thats me. however it turns out it will have no poison and i like that the best.

I am not sure I would want to start seed in worm castings. the very young sprouts do not seem to do well with fertilizers etc. I am not sure how the other things in worm castings might work for them though. YOu might germinate the seed and let them grow for a couple of weeks then transplant to pots with worm castings though.
