I went through this terrible reenactment of the Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. I was organizing my tobacco jars and bags in my smoking room, and I combined everything that wasn't labeled. This amounted to around 4 ounces. I labeled it potluck. I thought, this is an opportunity to try an essential oil I had never tried before. Rosemary.

Yuck.

So I added rose geranium.

No success.

I added some of the olive oil experiment tobacco to it.

No success.

I added whiskey.

I added natural cherry concentrate.

I baked it.

Still gross. Nothing but rosemary.

So then I added 1:3 latakia, so 25%.

This is good. Totally saved it. I'll classify it as a Lakeland English.

Maybe latakia is like hops. I theorize that sometimes craft brewers ruin a malt, then disguise it by loading a ton of hops into it. They then push it out for sale in the current fad of soapy, overly hopped beer.
I guess the question is, could there be other gross blends out there, lurking behind a latakia smoke screen? (Pun intended)
Or do blends just click sometimes?

I don't think you can mask a crappy blend, except with non-tobacco ingredients, such as oils, fruits, vegetables, condiments, deodorants, ethanol beverages, flower petals. A blend of pure tobacco ingredients either works for your taste or it does not. Having said that, some specific tobaccos taste terrible alone, but magnificent when blended with certain other tobaccos.

EDIT: Rosemary stems, at least, are on my "approved" list of firing ingredients for making Latakia at home.
