The Gift of a Pollinator
Pollinators give us so much, and for free. Three nights ago, as I was preparing to retire for the night, I sat on the side of my bed. I had previously removed my shirt, and sat in my jeans. I removed my boots, one by one, and set them nearby. As I proceeded to remove one sock, something stung my right forearm. I instinctively swatted it. It was a deep, searing kind of pain.
There, on my forearm, a honeybee stung me at least one more time. I swept it off my arm, and onto the carpet. The unfortunate, beloved pollinator did not survive. Something about being on the carpet, rather close to the heavy boot I had just removed. I softly spoke appropriate words, as I sent it to a better place (down the toilet).
Since then, my arm has itched and swollen over a patch of several inches.
My best guess is that it had lost its way back to its hive late at night, and decided to instead spend the night on the lower part of my denim pants leg, while I was still sitting out on my front porch. It calmly hitched a ride into my bedroom, where it no doubt expected a warm and cozy repose.
