I visited my great grandfather's 160ac homestead in Saskatchewan today for the first time. There are a couple buildings that date to the sixties after the farm had changed hands. Nothing of the original home exists. There is a pile of rubble from an old foundation and some caragana and lilac which are non-native here, the only possible vestiges of my family which broke the soil for the first time ever, over 100 years ago.

Nice! What goes on there now?
The neighbour bought it, I don't know when. He's already harvested those bales you see in these photos. I couldn't tell you what grain it was. That's half of the quarter section. The other half is canola which is still ripening.

It was 15 miles from pavement. I don't think there's much going on anywhere around there.

Nearest city is Yorkton.

I can't work out if this was a happy or sad journey for you. It must feel good to be on the land your family worked, and sad that there's little trace of them (apart from the obvious - 160 ac of working land made out of wilderness)
It would be nice if I had some similar ancestral pilgrimage, although, nothing in the family history remains apart from rare photos, names, professions and countries. I recall there's a town in Canada named after a surgeon who's illegitimate offspring is up the family tree, although, mention it for giggles - no desire to visit.
I hope the journey was good for you.

Canada has its share of funny named towns, one which has been made quite famous recently by late night show host Jimmy Kimmel is called Dildo and is located in the province of Newfoundland. Wonder how it got its name lol.
