I just finished air curing some Virginia gold and Havana Tobacco leaves. I chopped up one leaf (which I believe was Havana) and rolled it into a cigarette. It has no issue smoking and tends to stay lit if I puff it regularly enough, it just has such a “spicy” “tingly” sensation to it when it hits my tongue, and if I take what might be considered a normal drag, it punches me straight in the throat.

It’s my second time growing tobacco, and I didn’t have this issue the first time around using the same method. (Harvest, air cure, chop up and smoke) I haven’t used any pesticides or kept the tobacco near any chemicals that could have tainted the tobacco.

I’m wondering what I might have done wrong? Is the tobacco not meant for cigarettes? Is there another process I can add to reduce the strength of my tobacco? Is it potentially too high in nicotine which may be causing the tingling sensations? Any suggestions or relatable experiences?

Sounds great :) Where are you growing in NZ and how long do you air cure for? I'm based in Wellington. If you are willing to part with some of those Havana seeds I'd be very grateful.

Not sure if I should drag up an old thread but I have some Havana I am growing (NZ, bay of plenty) this year specifically for using as RYO tobacco. I was giving seeds by a lovely hillbilly down the road who doesn’t top his plants and let’s the leaves dry crisp and golden on the plant before picking. According to him they make excellent tobacco for RYO when harvested like this and can be used straight away. We shall see...
