I recall the chaotic days when gasoline stations realized for the first time that their huge signs for displaying the price per gallon would suddenly need to accommodate dollars as well as cents. When a lottery prize goes over $999,999,999, most retail lottery ticket sellers have to tape up a piece of cardboard to deal with the extra digit.

There are still some digital temperature displays on banks, etc. that have only two digits. It's similar to the easily predictable, Y2K "crisis", when two digit years became more conspicuously inadequate.

We humans prefer categorical information—brackets—over precise values, unless we are harping on records: the smallest, the biggest, the longest, the hottest, the longest-hottest, the driest (and of course, sports trivia). Here in southwest Virginia, the temperatures have been abnormal, and "toasty".
