The buckeye red always seems to grow VERY well!

Not exactly. It was purchased by my dad (seeds) about 23 years ago from a commercial tobacco farmer out of Maryland. It was that farmer’s “personal stock” (what the small bag of seed said on it) that he had created (hybrid) over a span of 20 years or so. The farmer knew my dad uses dip so I assume it is some kind of burley/Maryland type. It is good stuff. I have smoked it for years (in blends) and he has chewed it for many years. My dad didn’t know the farmer personally it was a friend of a friend type thing so that is all the information I was ever able to obtain. The farmer also gave him some yellow Orinoco no. 9 ? seeds but my dad was not as fond of that variety and didn’t keep it going. So some 20 some years later, he has given it a name and grows it almost exclusively every year.

If I could trouble you, I would love a photo of the mature Buckeye Red Plant, and blossom photo, and a photo of the 10th leaf (with a ruler). I'm not sure when I will go through the consummate torture of uploading a revised version of Tobacco Plant Varieties for Home Growers—likely late fall or beyond, but I would like to include a page on Buckeye Red.

So based on the fact that oriental sucker leaves are usually close to as good as the main leaves, I am leaving all my orientals plants to sucker to their hearts content this season. Is this a bad idea?

I'm doing the same, for the first time, with my Xanthi-Yaka 18a. So we'll both get to find out. The presumed goal is low nicotine, and an enhanced floral quality, of numerous, small (under 6" length) leaves. Part of this is the luck of the season's sun-curing weather. [Success might require the early spring grazing, defecation and urination of goats in the intended planting area.]
