This is my first attempt at growing tobacco. You'll note I'm also rather new around here...

Brown Thumb hooked me up with several strains which I was able to sow this evening. I've planted 12 cells each of Izmir, PA Red, Brightleaf, Catterton, YTB, ane Big Gem. Pics tomorrow, but I needed to record my start date.

I'm growing mostly to learn how (I like to know how everything works. It's a curse...), but pipe tobacco is the other goal.

I'm always open to tips, etc. Thanks for stopping by!

Welcome, it is often the case for many that grow more and more. There are always other varieties, other ways to manage. It's probably because you may extend

Welcome and good luck with your grow.

If you have planned equal garden space for each variety, you can start more of the izmir than the others, as it only requires about half the plant spacing of the bigger varieties.

Welcome aboard. It's really nice to see that you started a grow blog right after joining. Happy growing.

Thanks all for the welcome! As promised, a (very unexciting) picture.

Welcome to the forum. What sort of pipe tobacco do you prefer to smoke?

Bob

Bob, I've smoked mostly cigars until recently, and those only occasionally. The pipe adventure is thanks to a friend and is only a few months old. We usually have a pipe with our weekend happy hours. I've only tried aromatics so far, but I've really enjoyed them.

Welcome and good luck with your grow.

Garden plan! I knew I forgot something! :D We are actually closing on a new house next week, so these will go in the back yard there. Somewhere.

That picture IS to be excited about.

Soil looks kind of dry for germination, should be damp to the touch but not WET. If your tray came with the clear "greenhouse cover" leave it on until the seeds germinate, then open during the day for ventilation. I know my soil has enough moisture, if the clear cover develops a little condensation on the inside with the lid closed. Dry or buried seeds will not germinate.

Don't get me wrong, I am VERY excited about the growing season -- I just don't think that blank soil is as fun as germinating seeds...

I actually didn't make it home with the lid. I have to go back and get one. I did water it right after I took the picture, though!

As a side note, ya'll should know that my wife walked by when I was taking the picture and said, "Aw, are you taking pictures to share with your friends on your little tobacco site?" Oi. At least she's letting me grow... :D

When germinating, the best way to water is by "misting" with a spray bottle; to avoid washing seeds down into the soil. Once they are 1/2" tall or so, just keep about a half inch of water in the bottom tray and let them soak it up.

It's nice and clean. I like it. Good luck. Don't forget to label strains when you transplant. It is good to know exactly where is each strain. Specially when you dry it or ferment it. I know all this and still happen to forget.

Thanks for the heads up. I will try to remember that, too.

Ljubljana! I was just recounting a vacation I had in Bled to a coworker today! You live in a beautiful, beautiful country!

Another picture. Can't help it; this is fun! :D

The Izmir is still way ahead of the rest, but I've spotted at least one sprout of each strain. Pictured is the Izmir and YTB.
