It's a Prussian WWI helmet [Pickelhaube] with cover ruined in a trench.The U.S Marines had a helmet in a similar form at 1881-1902.

looking up that name, it appears they all have the spike on the top. I like the one on Sid's Avatar since it appears to be missing the spike. Or it could just be cropped off in the image.

The spike has been removed due to the snipers,in the trenches was an indication that a soldier is moving or he is trying to raise his head.The Germans modified their helmets even at the WWII,the side signs have been removed.
I haven't count them exactly,the list is in my blog at the left column, english index: A-L and M-Z.

What is the stem color? It looks silver in the picture. I like the contrast with the dark stummel. The gold bands are a nice touch also.

You can call it Ivory with Black notes like a cloud in the sky which moves fast before storm.In the picture looks more yellow because the camera is from a cellphone.
