Experiment with essential oils, but be careful not to use too much.

My current favorite recipe is railroad mills sweet lol, it's basically candy.

If a batch of snuff seems stinging / harsh to the nose, what are possible reasons?

Do you cook yours or just add the carbonate / salt and jar?

Thanks!

Just in case someone else reads this and wants to know ... grinding into a finer flour was one of the answers.

I put the snuff back into the grinder and then through a micro-mesh coffee filter and it helped a lot.

Yes to all.
You can grind it and add ground salt and call it done, let's call that basic and would be an example of an early recipe.
Next you could add a base
An essential oil
Water to ferment
Cook like snus
Add ghee and spices for a madras

The sky is the limit. Getting specific recipes is hard because generally people go to the grave with them, but generally it's as simple as grinding and sieving to size to make something you like.

I like toasts, so something i do is save all my cigar ends from rolling, leave them out to dry and grind them up. Next heat in a pot to char it to your taste, add the salt and base then grind and seive until super fine. Since it is a toast there is no shelf life, and since i used high quality tobacco and not the waste products the industry normally uses no flavoring/scenting is needed or wanted.

Hope this was helpful, there really isn't much to snuff making at it's basic level but you can get as creative as you want to.

Thanks for the info SmokesAhoy! I've made a couple of "basic" recipes and one with added base (sodium carb.) and flavorings (cocoa/vanilla).

Next heat in a pot to char it to your taste

The toasting is one thing I could use a little more info on ... high heat / low heat, how long? Thanks!

Toasting, just like toast you eat, the idea is to unlock some of the flavors from the process, so it's entirely up to you, as to what you like. Take a teaspoon worth and a laser thermometer and heat it up, do a few different toasts, store them airtight for a week and then see which you liked. Use the thermometer so your notes will let you document more info so you can recreate or tweak the temp a week later.

The industry sells toasts that range from hardly toasted to practically charred to suit different tastes, but you can just figure out what you like the most and just do that one.

Everyone wants a recipe, like a snus recipe but I know of none that exist, I've never even really made two identical batches, really all I can say is experiment, one day you'll make one that doesn't have that amateur quality, then build on that.

The main thing is getting your grind correct. Ball mills are tops

@SmokesAhoy, thanks again! Sounds like a laser thermometer and a Ball Mill are on my shopping list now.

While toasting, do you start to smell that buttery smell while cooking or does that show up after a week or so?

Yeah, all you'll smell is death while toasting. Drives wives out of the kitchen but I think the house smells divine for hours afterward.
