I put seedling in peat cups with Miraciegro pottin soil it has slow release fetalizer in it.I had It damp with waterand Superthrive. The seedlings in the jar looked better. The ones in the paper towel were stuck to it and had to be teased off. I have 5 from the jar and 5 from the paper towel.

and that '' slow release fertilizer'' will kill a seedling, keep a eye on that, and do a test run first,

i use a neutral soil, and add organic nitrogen based fert's. organic products, tend to not burn a young plant, perhaps, mixing the neutral soil, with some bone meal. or is it blood meal. anywho, it's nitrogen based, and the other is more of a potash base,

and from there, use a natural organic concentrated solution, [ usually made from fish, sea-weed, and other weierd ingrediants] but the stuff does wonders for anything thats a plant,

i just dont like the idea of using a time released fert. for starting anything,

Did you like the jar or paper towel better?

I think the jar works better. I havent had a problem with the slow release in miracle gro but I do keep an eye on it. Ive always used it with no problems. I have had problems with starter mixes.

I think, using a fertilizer without a soil test is really unneeded. I exclude the people who made a soil test, if there's a nutritient shortage in your soil you may use fertilizers. It's same for seedlings (in float trays) also. But if you want to made your seeds germinate faster you may use a stuff which contains humic acid. It also helps plant to absorb nutritients from soil easier but itself is not a nutritient. I don't know the names of commercial products in the US but I guess you may find them every related store.

I got the bag for my soil test today. I will send it off next week and follow the recommendations when the results come in. My county Co-op does the test for free so I'd be amiss not to take advantage of the service. I got my float trays and fortified dirt from BigBonner. Since the dirt already has the nutrients in it, I won't have to fertilize the seedlings until they are already well established. The float trays seemed best for me because I am growing so few varieties, easy to check nutrients with a TDS meter, and I really like the ability to transplant from the float trays straight to the ground. The less I have to do, the less I can screw up. This being my first season, I'm trying to follow the KISS principle as much as possible.

I think , but dont know that the fetalizer in the Miraciegro is real weak. Its made for house plants and they need very little fet. over a long time. Its always worked for me. I do need a soil test but I grow all over the yard so its hard to pick a spot to get the dirt from. Its best to do it in the fall so you can ajust the PH.

http://fairtradetobacco.com/showthread.php?18-Tell-me-about-float-tray-systems/page2 Read post #54. I've also seen this mentioned somewhere else. If you mix by the instructions on the bag, you could easily overfertilize. A cheap TDS meter is cheap insurance.

BigB uses this meter: Hanna Dist WP 4 Waterproof Conductivity TDS Meter BNIB I checked it on ebay and it was over $100.00. I bought the same name brand, Hanna, but a cheaper model, for $24.00. Here's one on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/TDS1-HANNA-...754?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ce63f5532

be easy throwing that HIGH TECH meter stuff, in here, me and boboro,

like to keep it simple, you think us NECK'S know anything about reading a measuring metermmmm>>????
..............................................

but really, those house plants that stuff is made for is plants allready established, not a seedling, im telling you it will release, that fertilizer, which would be fine for a 6'' tall plant... but not a seedling fresh out of the shell.

if you go thru the bag of fertilizer, and '' pick out'' the little globs of fertilizer, you will do better using that stuff,
