My name is Lock, I’m 29 years old now but I’ve been smoking cigarettes for at least half my life. I’ve always loved the culture around tobacco. I served 5 years in the Marine Corps where cigarettes and dip become a currency at times and I always loved the camaraderie I’d find in the smoke pit. I love exploring new countries and learning about their own tobacco culture, for example I’m a huge fan of smoking Fijian suki. While I was living in the UK I got a taste for hand rolling my cigarettes and it felt like I was evolving as a smoker. I’m very active and healthy, I believe moderation is key in all things.
I recently started my family and moved on from my vagabond lifestyle so I’m open to more hobbies like gardening, which I have about zero experience in. I’m loving the idea of growing my own tobacco to smoke and I’m glad to find such a deep source of knowledge on the topic.
Looking forward to seeing everyone’s methods and deepening my knowledge of tobacco culture.
Thanks for welcoming me.

Semper Fi, Jarhead. Welcome aboard. I was an 0331 for one enlistment, then re-up'd and did a lat-move to comm and became a data-dink. Now I do that for a living. I EAS'd 20 years ago this coming August. Where has the time gone?

My wife and I dabble with a garden, but I live in Montana, so the growing season is pretty short. Good luck with yours.

Semper fi brother. I was a combat engineer and embassy guard. EAS’d in 2019 just in time for the pandemic, only lately getting the hang of proper civilian life. Thanks for the reply, good luck to you and your wife as well. Rah

Welcome to the party!

There's still time to start some seeds for the northern climates. I suggest you research what fellow northerners have grown successfully (including our European freinds).
Thanks! Solid idea. I just ordered 4 varieties online so I’ll see how everything goes and adjust as I go.

Welcome! I got into this hobby under the same circumstance keeps me closer to home. While this forum won't guarantee a defense at failure, it does have all of the info here to bring success. I am in MO and I started seedlings 2 1/2 weeks ago, so I say you may have arrived just in time to start something for this season.

Just got my seeds going. I’ve got 4 varieties and I’m hoping all goes well. Part of my issue is that my yard hardly gets any full sun anywhere so I’ll be navigating that when the time comes. Good luck to you!

If I remember correctly, full sun is 6-8 hours (minimum). If anywhere gets that much, start the least shade tolerant there. Check out some of our Finnish members. At least one (can't remember who) has a plot surrounded by 20-50 ft tall evergreen trees.

Can't wait to see how well what you have grows. By the way, what varieties did you choose?

That’s a good idea. I’m thinking a small garden bed or even some 5 gal buckets but I also have a family member with land and I can put some in the ground. I’ll see if I can find these Finns you speak of on here, probably comparable to my northern climate anyhow.
I got Virginia gold, gold leaf 939, TN90 burley, and Black Sea Samsun. I’m looking to roll cigarettes but I’m also considering making snuff/Snus and eventually shisha.

A Finn here! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
You might want to check my last years grow log if there is anything useful for you. I am a beginner too, but starting to get the hang of it.
There is also one forum member from Sweden, Anders A, who has great grow logs. Here is his log from last year and you can find more just by searching with his username.

Thanks for the reply, I was actually going through some of your posts earlier today. Seems like your very dialed in! I’ll also check out the Swedes posts as well. I’ve only been in my current house for a year and I didn’t pay attention to sun patterns but I’m hoping I can find at least one spot around my yard that gets a solid 8 hours of sun light, just so many trees around

Welcome and thanx for your service!

I'm with you on the starting new hobbies thing.

Gardening has brought me much joy and activity, haven't really yielded anything but starting to understand the cultivation techniques...

For mental health's sake, don't worry about yield quantity. But it sure will teach you an appreciation for the skills and knowledge that a market farmer has.

When I went house hunting, I took a compass with me. I made sure that whatever house I was interested in buying had a clear south facing backyard.

That said, I'm not so interested gardening like I used to particularly since I only have myself to feed; life does force people to change their interests. I've gotten rather quite frustrated with the geese, deer and woodchucks eating the garden. Last year, I had a great bed of lettuce. Woke up one morning and it was gone. One time I saw a woodchuck go down one of my garden beds and saw it take out whole zucchini plants in just a couple seconds flat. One year, I tried growing a whole lot of pepper plants, about 70 of them. I transplanted them out into the garden and the next day they were all gone. That's why I'm trying growing tobacco now. Let's see them eat a tobacco plant. I'd love to see a woodchuck sprawled out on the ground puking on itself from eating tobacco. If they don't eat the tobacco, I just might get some to smoke later on. I refuse to be worried about it.

Sorry to hear about your critter problem, sounds like you need a dog or something to scare everything away lol. Yeah I’m mostly carnivore so never cared much for growing stuff to eat although I’m keen to at least have garlic and onion growing, I’m also gonna try my hand at luffa sponge. But I really just love tobacco and hate taxes so here I am.
