I sent an Email asking my contact what kind of knot they use at the bottom when tying the tobacco support string. This knot is important as you don't want it to choke off the stalks growth. Last year I used a simple slip knot and that was not right. It did pinch the stalk a little. He has not responded yet. I know he is starting tying soon and is probably as busy as a one armed paper hanger. I will be patient but will let you know as soon as I know. I need to start tying soon also and I'd like to get it right this year. I'll put up a pic as soon as I do (if not before). I guess if I get no answer I'll just have to wing it.

A bow-line would lock on the rope not the plant..and u can still undo it when ever...

My shade is from VERY large trees so I shade right from planting. None of the trees is within 100 feet of my raised beds but since most of then are 80+ feet tall the beds are shaded in the morning and again in the afternoon. I made several observations and made my best guess at 40%. It may be more. I know next year two of them are getting cut down and that will give a bit more direct sun. They are old, damaged and I can use the firewood

Here's the latest pics from my plot. Stringing got done this morning. Note some of the plants are not strung. If they are spindly or get tall enough I may do it later in the season. I have had no blow downs so far and figured it was time. The tallest plants (CT shade and MCY) just topped 36 inches. They were transplanted on May 30. The plants in the barrel halves were trans planted later and I forgot to write it down ~June 20. The little black buckets are some poor seedlings that I just put in today. If nothing comes of them I've lost very little.

Have you got any strong winds there, so to test the construction? It seems like the tall trees will protect tobacco from winds.

You are right. The trees do provide some protection. Still in thunderstorms the wind is strong enough to flatten plants. I learned the hard way.

Quick update -- The 36" plants of four days ago now measure 45". The rest seem to be keeping in proportion with no severe attacks of any kind yet. Pics now seem unnecessary. I may take some as growth gets more impressive. Like the moron said "So far, so good."

7/21 Update -- The Vuelta Abajo and the CT shade are in a dead heat now at 68" but the VA is blossoming and the CTS shows no buds yet. In my history the CTS will be taller by harvest time. You can see quite a difference between this pic and pic #3 in my 7/10 post.

Several plants are now in bud with only one open blossom so far. (I picked it) I don't know whether I want to top or not. Comments here indicate I will get larger, heavier leaf and suckering after topping. I am not sure I want either one. I am not growing for production. I want delicate leaf for wrapper and I sure don't want suckers. I am considering bagging only the blossom from which I want seed and letting the rest go their merry way. Any comments/suggestions guys?

The plants in the barrels are Stolak 17 given me by Amax. They appear to be squat heavy producers. The one African Red is doing well also. It too is a shorter plant.

John,
I believe you're right to not top your plants. Your preference for milder leaf with more subtle qualities would argue against topping.

I left many plants untopped in 2012. My impressions was that all those yummy, exposed blossoms increased my problem with budworms. I'm not sure if that's really the case.
