Knucks, I can fix that tire for you. If not, then replace it cheaper than any tractor place will touch. BTW, thanks for the "gift".

Thanks for the offer DG. The tire just needed a new valve stem, it got pushed inside the tire. I replaced both front tires last year. The rears are getting some dry rot, but I hope to keep them going a couple more years. (With luck, one already had to have a boot in it)
BTW, your welcome. :)

Well, Knucks, you have to consider the total cost of purchase, maintenance and repairs over the tractor's lifetime. Then you apportion a "value" to its productivity in everything you use it for over that lifetime. I've done the exact math for you, and the replacement of a front tire = sucks.

Bob

Luckily, I didn't need tire replacement. Incredibly, DeluxeBob made a joke in my Grow Blog. How many of you guys can say that? LOL This makes my season right here.

Tobacco season has arrived in Alabama!! I got my soil sample to the Co-op to have sent off for analysis. I got seed planted in Bonner's plastic jar greenhouses. Three varieties to start with. I'm taking Boboro's advice and spacing my starts. Tn 90 Burley, Virginia Gold K326, and Izmir. I turned the patch again and cleaned out a clogged up ditch. I finished a pipe. And I got my material cut to build the water boxes for my float trays. 1x6 pine with 3/8 plywood bottom. The boxes will be 2'x3'. I'm about to make them now, so I'll post pictures later. Lovely day.

Knucklehead, Measure your float trays before you make your box. I can't remember the dimensions but when I made mine last year I allowed something like 2 extra inches. This was a little small because I had a hard time getting my hands into the box to pick up my float tray.

The trays measure 13.5 x 26.5. I built them their own private swimming pools. lol.

I just checked mine (the box) and they were a little smaller than I remember. My box measures 14 x 27, adequate but really tight. You need the box big enough for the tray to actually float.
How are you going to make it water tight? I considered a layer of plastic but decided instead to melt some wax and paint the inside of the box.

I can't believe I only left a 1/2 inch clearance!

I'm going to drape 2-3 thicknesses of heavy duty polyethylene in them. It's used under gravel for a vapor barrier before pouring cement in a basement or garage floor. Should hold up nicely. I'm also using pocket screws so they'll be easy to assemble, break down and reassemble. I just have to remember to number the boards.

Good. I'm looking forward to having some sprouts to put in them. I'm starting them in the plastic jar greenhouses, but Emre said the seed I sent him didn't sprout so if his are bad, mine are bad. Burley and Virginia. I ordered some more yesterday (different vendor). I'm still in good shape, should see some Izmir sprouts soon.

Beautiful location. When you took those pictures? It's still winter here at my place. One more week and sun should approach.
And this is my location week ago:

I took them about 2 weeks ago. It's still winter here but we rarely get snow and only one or two inches when we do. The most I remember is about 6 inches. It looks like you have alot of snow. That Ushanka is coming in handy, yeah?

My new seed arrived today. I restarted some in jars and some in paper towels. I also started some BSS-Maden and YTB. That will be five varieties so far. Burley, VA gold, Izmir, BSS-Maden and YTB. I may start some more varieties in another week.

It appears you may be missing a few varietys for your cigars Knucks. The only difference I noticed with growing multiple varietys was in keeping them labled to keep from getting them mixed up. But it gives you a broader selection to choose what to smoke. I still have a lot extra seeds. Pm if you need some.

In regards to cigars I have bezuki wrapper and binder, 2 lbs each of Dominican Ligero and Seco already and 10 lb. of nicaraguan filler on the way. I shouldn't have to grow anything besides maybe some wrapper for a looooong time. This being my first year I'm going to concentrate on cigarette varieties, BSS-Maden, and a few seed grow outs. Three of the four varieties I got from the seed bank were BarG specials. I'm pretty good for now, but thank you very much for the offer.
I tried to order some more Bezuki about 10 min. ago, but missed the boat. All gone. :(

hey knucks, have you tried adding havana tobacco in place of some if not all of the burley and Turkish? I'd be surprised if you don't find your needs for "cigar" tobacco to steadily increase. it's so good i find it hard not to incorporate it in everything.

You snooze you lose.;) I got an order in as soon as I saw Dons post about not being likely to be refreshed. Good luck with your grow! You have a really fine looking piece of property. Some of the havanas are great for cigarettes also, At least I think so.
