It does look good! Your going to have your hands full in about 2-1/2 months, there wont be any time for posting. My son looked at the patch and said daddy are we gonna half to tie all that tobacco again? I said No we have four more varieties this year so there will be even more, he just sank in his chair.

I have no idea yet what I'm setting myself up for. I have 136 plants in the ground, 45 coming from Larry, and 218 in flats just starting to pop the surface. It's all Chickenhawks fault with all that Bigger, Badder and Better talk. I got carried away. I think it was like a mob mentality thing or something. This forum gets me too fired up.LOL

I can't imagine leverheads 1000 plant home grow. That's going to be a hell of alot of work. And tobacco. I'm hoping this year will teach me a lesson and I'll dial it back next year. lol

Yep! LOL.

During colonial times in Virginia, when the founding drug lords were worried about the reputation of Virginia tobacco, they concluded that a single man could handle 1 acre (then, about 800-1200 plants) of tobacco, if he worked it full-time. If he also had a family to assist with the work, then 2 acres could be managed.

Of course, way back then, they didn't have tillers, Crock Pots and canned beer.

No you wont! You'll be like the rest of us and you'll figure out that if you tighten it up you can fit a few more plants in.

Whew! I'm well under the 800 plant mark, so I'm in better shape than I thought. But poor old leverhead. He's too old for that kind of work. However, with that poor soil of his, it may work out about the same in the end.

I may also figure out that Don sells some pretty damn good tobacco at a reasonable price. lol
No canned beer. The barbarans.
They did have plenty of wagons to fall off of though. I went on the wagon one time, but it turned out to be pulled by Clydesdales.

I got good germination on the seed planted April 29. I just thinned them down to 2-3 plants per cell. The 9 GRIN varieties and 3 cigar varieties on the far left were planted May 6. No germination there yet. Still a little early. The single flat is some cigar variety seedlings I moved off the heat mat to make room for the GRIN seed. tray.jpgtrays1.jpg

The weather since I planted my first wave of plants has been rainy and overcast. The plants are looking a little yellow and bedraggled. We had a couple days of sun and they started perking up a little bit, but more rain in the forecast. I have my fingers crossed. I'm about to place a BigBonner order to finish out my Burley row and get some more Turkish and cigar varieties. I have some Virginia back ups so I'm okay there. Next year, I'm taking a page out of Stogie's grow blog and getting all my personal plants from Larry and just starting a few test and sample varieties in the house. I hate indoor farming. lol.

Mr KnuckleHead,
Where did you get that heat mat? looks like it fits under 2 flats?
My heat lamp has tendency to create hot spots which wasn't to bad with the peat pellet setup I used last time I guess because they had a lil air circulation around each pellet, but the regular flats are showing dry areas and that means instant death to a baby

www.growerssupply.com they're kind of pricey but they do a really good job. They advertise keeping the soil 10 degrees above ambient temps or you can buy a thermostat. They have single mats also. This is the same place I got my 1020 trays.

I totally agree and he sure has the best. I'm still hooked on seeing them germinate. I think next year will be a lot different for us with the varieties that will be available to us it'll be like no year before! FM will be needing a lot of grow-out's and I think the warehouse will need an extension just to hold the seed!

I hear that. It'll be nice going to the local FTT Seed Bank Branch and picking up some seed at the drive through. lol
