I think don is right on that, Clover can add nitrogen into the the soil if you have the right nitrogen fixing bactria for the plant. the plants them selves can be turned into soil afterward to build up organic matter which is important for heavy, clay soils. the only problem is you lose a season doing that.

Knucklehead,
You have a lot doing it. And you mentioned clover places not being affected as much. If it is magnesium or iron , adding the epsom salts and iron suplement and even a little nitrogen will work fast. Cant lose much from the pics. You having had loads of rain might have leached the nutrients from the ground. Also I noticed that when my containers got to high of ph [ limey] they would act up too. I think the same would happen if you got to acidy as well. Also a cool spell or shady will make them act up too. Later in my season the plants did a lot better than when it was cooler. Like flowering about 1' taller than first planting and no suckers yet at all :)

An interesting side note to the frenching plants is that many of them have begun to put on suckers, while none of the plants not showing frenching are suckering.

All day rain today, possibly tomorrow, so no help in sight for my frenching issue. It comes back down to the ages old question: French Army or Italian Navy?

Yeah, I got hit too. I have plants down. I have frenching taking over my wrapper variety grow outs. My first patch is still sitting there with the lower leaves looking ripe before they've even begun budding. I'm so far behind on pulling grass I don't know that I could catch up all over even if I had enough dry days to try. Aphids in the first patch, I'll spray them today. Problems everywhere except the lower patch for grow outs, it's looking good. I'll do what I can, that's about all I can do. I've run out of cuss words. I know sign language and I've cussed till my fingers are raw. I may have to learn a new language just to have some fresh bad things to say.

You're a courageous soul, Knucks. The first year is always an eye opener. You've taken on a major challenge, and still hanging in there. So, poopoo happens. (I don't think you've used that word yet.) You will certainly end up with some leaf to be proud of.

My late started VA is doing well. I hope your grow out patch does as good. As always if you need a hand let me know and I will help if I can. Siding about done on the house (between rainstorms) but still have firewood to cut and may need a hand with harvest myself in a few weeks or so.

I had very few aphids on plants in the full sun but the ones in partial shade were terrorized with em........ And again the cut stalks in the grow bags which are slated for destruction this week have all sprouted out and growing like hell... And not an aphid............. Weird.

I'm down but not out of the running yet. Enough dry weather could still turn it all around. More wet weather could finish it off. I'm working on what I can control and trying not to let what is out of my control get to me. There's always next year. I passed the point of diminishing returns quite a while ago as far as pulling out what I'm putting into it though.

The lower growout patch is looking really good so far. They're the best looking plants at this stage that I've had all season. If they can keep from drowning too, that patch will be a winner. More rain in the forecast though.

I come close to having the bugs and grass caught up and then the rain keeps me inside. The bugs and grass don't mind the rain. They can get ahead of you in a hurry when the work starts piling up and the dry days to do it in are so few. I've never seen this kind of weather this late in the year down here.

I don't know what happened to my early warning system. For the longest time you could tell me when something was headed my way. You were my No. 1 weather man. Then our weather systems split off. I'm glad most of it missed you though. You can water when it's dry, but there's nothing you can do about near daily rain. I was so proud of my drip system I forgot all about drain pipe. lol

My song from HEE HAW:
Gloooom, despair, and agony on me, ooooooh
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery ooooooh
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all ooooooh
Gloooom, despair, and agony on me.

How many of ya'll remember that one?
