This is some of my winter grown havana..stayed pretty dormant till it warmed up abit..and now are just getting flowers..they're as good as some that grew in summer .almost worth trying a big winter crop;).

How cold does it get at night in winter over there? My balcony baccy has seen several nights of 5°c and is still flowering and ripening.

It was a pretty mild winter..only a few frosts that weren't real bad ones..it mustn't get below 8c at night most the time..it gets cold when it blows from the south. .sth West but thats not to often..the Auckland winter average was 8c(46f) -14.7c (58f)..but got down to 5.5c in may..

You did well there over the winter mate.

I'm going to do the same with some going into 2014 winter.

Naturally, the object is to have them well established prior to winter and you succeeded!

That leaf on the left looks a little under ripe, in my opinion, no?[/QUOTE]

Its havana cigar bind.the photos of the live plants is after I took off that leaf...so its only the bottom muds..lugs..and first prime leaf....im not too fussed about it ..really I need to get it out to prepare for more..as I need all the space I can get

Well, if they cure easily they should be good to go. I've found that waiting for a little yellow while still on the plant helps the curing a lot. I only grew havana 142 this year as far as cigar variety goes. They grew a little strange and looked a little "damaged" when I picked them. Most of the havana 142 cured ok though, curing to a nice light brown.

From what most people say..you dont want them to mature too much cause you start get crinkled alligator leaf that hard to flatten and thick veins. Its sometimes hard to judge..basically just pick when its a lighter green..I only snapped the heads off yesterday

Hmmmm... yes, I suppose alligator leaf would make fairly ragged cigars. My main focus this time around was air cured for flavor so I read mostly about virginias. Quite the complex deal this tobacco growing bit ! Lol

Hey,wait a minute. I'm having a hard time getting my head wrapped around this one. I just visited a thread where you're starting seed for a new season, then come on this thread where you're winding up last season. Must be some hellacious growing weather over there. lol. Nice job.

Seanz lives at the bottom of the south island which is much colder especially in the winter.

jekylnz and myself live at the middle to top of the north island which is more favourable for mature plants to continue through winter.

Currently, I'm having a hell of a time with the wind which is normal for spring in new zealand. I keep telling myself every year to sow/plant after the spring winds.

I NEVER LISTEN TO MYSELF.
