Every cigar is different, I use havana 142, guatemalen, huehuetenago, mcy, Dark fire cured, and burley either as single varietys or mix them up. I also add a strip or 2 of virgina flue cured to give my cig. flavor and its mellow in a cigar, Bursa and ottoman after this yr.and many more. Its been awhile since I had any oriental but the bursa and orinaco blanco went over well with me. My cigars may be unortodox but they smoke well and are inhalable. I try to wrap with a good shade leaf wrapper, sun grown works better if its kilned awhile, or a havana 142. They seem to work best for what I have to work with. Some times I'll spice it up with some other special leaves obtained from other members as well as some of the above listed varietys. I'm just now starting to figure out what works for me. The dark fire cured is a good leaf as it seems to mellow out more robust varietys.

Check out the roots on some of Bonners seedlings,I have 2/3 of his in the ground. I,m still a couple weeks away before mine will be ready. I decided not to use last years plot for baccy and added on to this years new plot. Will be adding lime tomorrow, the soil looks much better and has no contamination from last years fertilizer. I also added a small shade plot for a couple dozen plants to try out for some thin wrapper.

Those roots from the bottom of the soil hang out the bottom of the float trays in nothing but water .

You can see him eying that tobacco, but I pulled him off a potato plant.

I went thru the 6 pack and 9 pack cell trays this afternoon and transplanted the cells that had several multiples, by separating and putting extras in cups. I picked up 90 plants when this new tray is full. They have much better roots than the sprouts in the starter diishs. I'll stop at about 500 total plants, about 25 to go, and have plenty of extra replacements for after planting.

All my plants vary in age by as much as 3 weeks.

wish I could get a first starting in growing

PM your address toad and I'll send you some of my extra sprouts, Maybe they will survive the mail and you won't have to germinate. I have planted about all i'm going to plant, I'm gonna try to send some to cowboyjames also. They need to be replanted from there starter tray so I'm trying to find a way not to waste them.

BarG

Edit: sprouts away along with seeds cowboyjames

Heres some fresh pics of this years efforts. The float tray holds 90 7 oz cups and i'm using bonners 20-10-20 fertilizer he sent with plants [used in his float trays] in tray till I run out. I also used a cup per plant at planting. I hope BB or FTT will make this available to members next year.I plan on sealing the smaller tray and doing the same as well as building a couple more for seed flats. They take about 10-15 min. to make. I started mixing canadium peat to my baccto reed peat , It doesn't saturate as much as just the baccto. I added on to my new plot because i'm afraid the chlorides from last years fertilizer may not have leached out of last years plot. You can see that after 4 days every one of bonners plants have survived.

BarG, The pic of your patch has what looks like phone poles in the background or is that the goal posts you kick horn worms thru? ;< ))

Hey Mr. BarG.. you might want to badger Bigbonner in to getting those 72 cell float trays to sell for next year. It takes about 2 minutes to fill them whereas it looks like it might have taken you about 4 or 5 weeks to fill all those styrofoam cups :)

He has said in the past though that getting the trays is not the problem, it's trying to get them shipped.

That box actualy holds water, go figure. Thats the only way I can handle all those cups. I just built 2 more for the seed flats now no more toten to my out door sink. After seeing that soil mix bonner sent with plants and fertilizer I mix my reed peat with the canadium peat with a bit more perlite trying to match the consistancy. It seems to be working because the straight reed peat stays more saturated while the mix stays a more damp than wet at top of cups. Can you post a pic of the float tray, they sond like a good idea. Thats about 2 1/2-3 1/2 hours pokin holes, fillin dirt ,labeling and planting for 90 cups..

What diameter is the bottom of the hole? I'm keeping my ear to the ground for a styrofoam source in my area . I want some 1 1/2" and will be on the look out for some 2 1/2 " also.

This was his p.m. to me .....The float trays are 13.5 inches wide and 26.5 inches long by 2.5 Inches deep . The square hole in the bottom is about a quarter inch .the top is about one inch . They V shape from top to bottom where the plants grow . They float on 4 inches of water .
I have the 72 cell float trays and soil I was going to be selling on FTT .

The trays I use for my tobacco production Is 200 cell . Some use 242 , 253 or 288 cell . I prefer the 200 myself .

You fellows use Styrofoam and such. Fine. I have been making my own newspaper pots for a couple of years. A fellow (BeeBiz) on the other forum showed me how to make them. It's simple. They go into the ground along with the plants (no unpotting necessary) and decompose as the plant grows. You just need newspaper, a little Elmers white glue and a jelly jar or such, of the size you'd like your pots. It's nice if the jelly jar (form) is slightly tapered but not required. I use an empty pill bottle. It's slippery and the size I like. Cut the paper into strips. A single edge razor blade or an Exacto knife and a straight edge. Wrap the strips around the jar with enough sticking off the bottom to fold for the bottom of the pot. )You'll figure out what width to make the paper so this comes out right.) Put a little Elmers on the end to keep it from unwinding. Fold the bottom edges of the paper in and put a dab of glue on that too. Now slide the cup you just make off and start again. A TV news program is enough time to make 40 or 50 pots and gives you something USEFUL to do.. The pots with soil and plants sit in a little water in a tray until it is time to plant. It's easy and cheap.
