Some type of mineral condensing as the leaf dries would be my guess.
Correct also, that is what they call bloom. I wonder if the pressure from the press presses it out and it's on the juice left on the leaf.

I'm familiar with the "bloom" concept on tobacco. My impression is that the Perique process somehow encourages a yeast to slowly grow on the surface of drying Perique leaf. I have not examined it under a microscope, or cultured it to verify that. At any rate, it seems to have little, if any, effect on the quality of the leaf.

But that's just my two yeast cells.

Well four months now.
The plug and Baccy puller para cord worked super duper.
A couple of pulls on each cord and the plug came right out. the Baccy came wright out just by pulling it up.
This smells better, not as much ammonia smell and a little fruitier smelling.
Color is starting to even out. Saved a sample of each month also.

Pulling the plug again, smells fruity with a slight fermation smell.
Plug and Baccy came out easy with the string setup again.

You could probably throw that plug on a set of coals and turn on a whole campfire full of people to the wonders of perique. I have a lot of air cured perique and its good tobacco.

Bt , I notice quite a difference in my perique from all other leafs. Do You notice that?
Yes I did. That was when I harvested them. I remember mumbling something to myself about the leaf.
I think smaller, narrower and stickier.

I pulled her plug tonight. Damn she smelt like septic at first.
I was worried that for some reason it was rotting.
Once I got the plug out the fruity fermenting smell was back.
Im going to let it rest for a hr or so then put it back in.

Looking real good there, BT! That "fruity, fermenting smell" is definitely a sign that things are heading in the right direction :)

You are Santa Claus. I arrived home to a beautifully fragrant package. As the good steward of these magnificent smells, what proportion do you recommend blending to enjoy the Perique and the others? I suspect it'd be too strong for me to smoke straight, and I'll probably get a new corncob for it because it'll ghost. I can't wait to try it, and I especially can't wait to make my own based on your instructions. Going to be a fun summer.

Personal taste is just that. Perique tends to smooth out a blend and reduce tongue bite. Make a blend that sounds good, then add the perique in increments until you like the result.
