Boy, I hate to post pics of Ben Brand's ostrich drumsticks on the cigar.com thread, because I fear those pics will discourage c.com first-timers who have not yet sent their submissions in, or who have not yet rolled a drumstick. They'll take one look and say: "How can I beat THAT?"

... and how could they?

So I want to propose something which is essentially unfair because it changes the rules in mid-stream. What would you guys think if instead of one resplendent prize I awarded two half resplendent prizes; one for best newb, and another for best expert? I do not believe in that PC "everyone gets a prize for participation" horse pebbles; but there is such a wide disparity in skill between c.com and FTT, as displayed by the very first FTT attempt versus the c.com attempts so far. Originally, I'd hoped to get ten rollers from here; that didn't work out; I widened the pool; now we got pros versus joes.

Gimme your blessing on this notion before I post Ben's pics over there.

Ben, your package and Big Dog's were mailed the 20th of last month. We're working on our 3rd week now. I hope Boko Haram didn't shortstop the dang things and smoke 'em.

Deluxe -- I went looking for those two sheet metal patterns last night. I found the binder one. The wrapper pattern? Well, as Bearswatter often reminds me, "You couldn't find your butt with both hands if you dropped your soap in the prison shower." Okay, that's not the way she says it exactly, but along that line. I would not put it beyond me to have thrown it out, because as Bearswatter often reminds me: 'You'd throw me out if I gave you half a chance." Okay, that's not the way she says it exactly, but ... yeah that is how she says it exactly. Deal is, if I threw out the pattern for the wrapper, I would have thrown out the one for the binder, too. You'd think. Most probably, I put it somewhere where I could not possibly misplace it, cause that's precisely how I lose everything else. I will make a more thorough search this weekend. The garage needs a good rummage anyways. It's getting ankle deep in spiders, tobacco leaf stems, sawdust, and cigar ash.

OK back to work now. Nuff foolin around.

I don't think it would be un-fair. I'm game, I think all the sticks shown so far are good. Ben, That is a sweet stick buddy! delux., that stick will work on the any time of day smoke. Nice work guys.

Ben, my hat off to you ... my first attempt well ... lets just say at the end of it had lots of scrap tobacco and ended up just rolling a loose fill stick and smoking it :) Going to try again once I have free time .. As for sharing the prize .. how do you define expert vs noob ? but ya sure since I won't be winning, the prize can be split :)

Although I agree that the "drumstick" shape is a fun and challenging cigar to attempt, I believe it's far too difficult and frustrating for a new roller, who may have never successfully rolled a parallel cigar. Your cigar.com folks are likely quite skilled at identifying nice smokes at a tobacconist. By contrast, some members here are wild and crazy enough to have designed and manufactured their own shredders, Liebermans, kilns, flue-cure chambers, Perique presses, Cavendish cookers, pipe tobacco presses, custom rolling tables, tobacco transplant setters, cigar molds, cigar blends, pipe blends, cigarette blends, etc. It's a different perspective on being a tobacco aficionado.

By all means, divide the competition in two, and simply ask each participant how many cigars they've rolled, total, in their lifetimes. My guess is you'll get a strongly bimodal curve for deciding who is grouped into which of the two categories.

Bob

PS: I'm not in the competition.

Gent's, I have been at the roll all day, and came to an idea.( Due to watching folks smoke a cigar) Now watch a right handed person puff on one. They twist it to the right side on the puff..( over the knuckles to the top.) Then watch a left handed person do the same.. The cigar unravels in the hand,( they go left). and they thump spit the stick befor they get to enjoy it. All the posts and vidio's show a right handed roll? So- Now I am going to throw in a SILVER EAGEL to the first left handed roll that webmost picks due to that. It will be sent with both of My enteries, all by hand. Left and right. Will that work folks?? It is going to web. when I am done tonight? PS: I watch which way the water goes down the drain. It goes counter clock here. In NZ RT. And Your"s? All of the sticks I have seen are great, and thanks for letting Me roll for this. Mad- Now that is what gave Me the idea.

Each wrapper leaf, after stemming, has a left oriented half and a right oriented half. In order to have the upper (darker and less prominent veins) surface of the wrapper on the outside of the cigar, you have to wrap a cigar either to the right or to the left, depending on which half of the wrapper you're using.

Commercial cigars are sorted as either lefties or righties, and go into separate boxes, so they all appear the same. But due to the complex math (there's one left wrapper for every right wrapper), any box of cigars you open has a 50% chance of being either all lefties or all righties. It's called chirality--lefties are mirror images of righties.

I'm not sure what role the handedness of the smoker might play.

OK Steve Satch quatch cigar you want to smoke, the drumstick or the perfecto? Shoot me your addy and you're on. This whole gift and swap section is all about the joys of sending your cigars to strangers. More fun than a short bus in a tornado.

I found that when I roll, it is rt. handed all of the time. When I de-stem, I roll with the rt. side of the leaf. And save the the left for a filler or another rt sided roll with the veins down. If I do a dbl. binder I lay the bottom leaf veins up and the other side down. The idea was in the habit of a roll, I find I do the same all of the time, and see other folks do it as well. It wasn't in the math. But the other part of it is, how many folks around You roll cigars? I only know of two here and still enjoy watching them roll a stick.( They do the same thing) It is just to fun to watch. Mad-

Punch is one of my favorite cigars to smoke. Whatever I make, I can't guarantee the size, but I'll come close to the drumstick. That said, I'm sure there are better rollers out there than me......
